Wall display racks

My 10’ balsa took a tumble last night.  I had it displayed with Hawaiian Gun Racks.  One of them broke, and the rest is history.  30 lbs of balsa hit furniture, the christmas tree and the hard tile floor.  The fin is broken, the nose and tail blocks are damaged and several big dings on the rails.  Will require significant repair.

Looking for safer options to display this board.  Opinions wanted.  What is the best commercial display rack?  Should I build my own?  Thanks

Happy Holidays.

Tim

two screws into studs

80# monofillament loops

arround nose and tail

along with any wall rack

make a great failsafe.

I am glad the list

of damages didn’t include

a sleeping head

on a couch cushion.

…ambrose…

maybe the spirit board

just wanted to go surfin

and jumped off the wall

when it heard

the surf was good.

no rack can hold

a spirited board.

For storage purposes, I use 1" nylon webbing formed into a loops and fastened into the studs with screws ans finish washers.

Kensurf did some nice ones awhile back, if I find the pics, I'll post 'em.  Or maybe he'll see this thread, and share his design again.

Here's a pic I just found of Resinhead's rack...

and here's one by Scoutsky82

There are lots of options.  T-rax are good, pricey but deinitly strong.  You can make your own and alot of the utility racks sold at Home Depot and Lowes work well also.

here they are

thats a good one ambrose. it just wanted to go for a surf.

kensurf that yellow & sunburst is beyond description. better take it for a surf or it may jump off the wall too and knock you in the head while you sleep!

Holy Crap!  Check out those killer boards!

I buy the clear ones.

I don’t like to take away from the board with wooden racks.

However it’s a matter of taste I guess?

Regardless if you make wooden racks or buy the clear acrylic ones remember it’s the attachment!

I always use a stud finder and anchor to a wall stud.

Kind regards and Merry Christmas,

surfding

Howzit ken, The bottom set is similar to some we made on Kauai but they were shaped like old style Hawaiian fish hooks and we had 2 on the bottom and one in the middle on top. With the top one you can make the hooks with shorter ends wrapping the rails. Wish I had a Picture.Aloha,Kokua

Surfding,

I had some clear ones about 10 yrs ago and one broke and dumped a Phil Edwards balsa.  I was lucky on that one.  The fin hit first and stuck in the wood floor.  Only damage was tip of the fin.  What kind of clear racks do you use.?  Thanks

Tim

Ambrose,

I will certainly add the safety of monofilament to my next display.  I was planning to take it for a surf during my time off for the holidays.  I guess it couldn’t wait.

BTW, the rack guys are completely standing behind their product.  Replacement of racks and repair of board.

Thanks

Tim

All the boards for Jersey Mikes Sandwich shops use the Clear Ones to hang there Boards.

I took a pair from the shop for my house for the 8’10 Pinao Black Sunset Gun for my TV room.

So far so good. I’m going to build a few more for the house in 2012.

I plan to use the same ones.

I am going on vacation in a couple of hours I will be at LAX taking off.

However when I return to the factory I’ll see were we get them and let you know.

Kind regards,

surfding

Mike, is that one of the blanks Lahrrrrry made for you, that was one of the biggest mistakes of my life to let him into my shop and show him anything, now it is straighten out all the mistakes he comes back with.

top name shaper couldn’t do his own mitered nose block, had Lahrrrrrrry bring it back to me

Jim that is classic. I love your work. What you do with wood is beyond most shapers.

I did do some work with a few redwood blanks for Larry. You put just the right touch to give the perfect finish.

The rockers were a bit of a challenge.

Kind regards,

hoggatg, Hawaiian Gun Racks look pretty strong, what broke??

Still have a couple of pairs of the clear acrylic racks that were all the rage in the 90's..  Don't remember what they were called. Pro racks or something???   Saving a pair for the 9'0 Brewer gun.

Surfding, That board on your wall is AMAZING! Just getting a couple boards under my belt, fully addicted! As a custom car painter/builder I want to do a few to hang in the house, after I build my boys and I enough to surf. Love the clean look of it,thanks for sharing!

OK Ken, very nice boards, but where did you get the wood racks?

I’m looking to mount on my wall a very rare, one of only 3 of the first Epoxy boards hand shaped by Rich Harbour after Clark closed.

I like the wood racks you’re using and need to know where you got them, especially the bottom rack.
