Washington and Oregon Surfers

no offense on the name dropping of locations, at least i didnt mention surfing the weird tidal wave at deception pass or how to get to boulders/longboard point or lauras…

places get crowded right? its a bummer but like i’ve always told locals who grew up up here, it could be worse and will never be as crowded as surfing at trestles or new smyrna inlet or malibu so relax, smile and educate those less knowledgable than yourselves on surf do’s and do not’s and things like that…

LOL…luckily just finding a spot here is only half the battle.

…and just because you can find a spot doesn’t mean you’ll get waves there.

Everybody has a right to the ocean but Know your limits and respect the locals…it should be common knowledge, but go to westport on a weekend and you’ll see it’s not.

ha ha that picture is really out of control, surfs up I am there! peace.

MCDink and the rest of you fugfaces. I hope I never find out who you are.

Better yet, You better hope I never figure it out.

How could you possibly speeeel that kind of chit on a forum?

Surf sucks in the PNW.Cold fickle and sharky.

DO NOT COME HERE.

Good to see this thread is going strong. Since I have already come and gone and had a great trip out there, thank you to all for the info.

Ended up hitting up Cannon Beach/Seaside area. Met a lot of chill people, some actual locals…now let this thread die

Good for ya, this post is actually garnered the attention of the Portland Kook Squad that inhabit the OSP…

STAY HOME, OREGON IS FLAT, COLD, FICKLE AND SHARKY.

The locals are not real friendly either.

Since when are “locals” anywhere ever friendly…they get their pathetic identities from sitting on their thumbs…I always thought the term “locals” was an abbreviated version of “local yokels”, a derisive term for local residents with a connotation of being unfriendly to visitors…

Local residents though…I actually do respect them

Naw, we get it by keeping the wankers from Portland and the valleys out of our cold, fickle and sharky surf. Our thumbs have nothing to do with it.

We do treat travelers a little better…but we can spot a Portland kook a mile away…Can you say ‘surftech’?

Nope, never be as crowded as the south and we will keep it that way.

Hot in Ojai today?

Jeez…I re-read what I wrote…my simple world view always seems hard to explain…local surfers are surfers who live locally…“locals” in my opinion are usually people who like the localism action first and foremost and above surfing…ah well…

I’ll tell you what will keep the PNW waters less crowded than other places: how much effort it takes to score good surf. In SoCal half the hassle is picking which board to ride, not having to constantly assess the weather and wind and tides and drive around for a couple of hours hoping to catch it all together. That said though…I saw a ton of soft-ish boards on the tops of vehicles with the fins at the rear of the vehicle recently…the telltale signs of surfers who started with the New Millenium as near as I can tell. I thought they all came from Bend? That was about as disheartening as having Dale Solomonson tell me a couple of years ago that my favorite O spot was shunned by long-time locals because it was a known shark breeding ground…which he probably took particular glee in doing. I’ll take his word for it. I’ve never seen another surfer there, ever.

It’s hot and flat in Ojai once again, probably. How the Malloys ever got good living there is beyond me. The heat wave seems to have broken, although yesterday was a cooker in my part of the flatlands…kind of like the last time I was in Seaside…two weeks ago…enough to make one believe there may be some truth in this Global Warming ™ thing…

Nels,

The locals of Bend are no longer the locals. I was born and raised. You probably saw some New Millenium Bendites transfered from elsewheres with cash in hand from homesales with the idea of living in an “outdoorsmans paradise” with out a mortgage. Surfing’s only one of the adventures you’ll see them partaking in, and kookin it up. Eddie Bauer flyfishing, hiking, skiing, and building housing developments in the middle of the beauty, man they are everywhere. When I grew up there was maybe 25k people now its more like 80k and climbing. Made me want to move back to San Diego.

Surfinghigh,

Does being a surfer who lives in Portland that doesnt ride a surftech or softboard make you a kook? Thought I met some non-kookie surfers while I lived there, mostly transplants from cali and hawaii. Cold, fickle, and sharky…yep.

There is no surf here. Everyone piss off!

“Outdoorsmans paradise without a mortgage” sounds pretty good to me, too…But. I’m not much for helping to create or sustain the worst of wherever I’m leaving. Makes for some serious grey zones in the moral/ethical department for me…which oddly probably makes me the kind of person who should make one of those moves. The one’s who don’t care at all will be knocking shortly.

At a wedding in Hillsborough this past August I had the novel experience of driving by an oddly familiar development. It took only a few moments to recognize a downtown high-density urban redevelopment project which is icon of local redevelopment addicts in my little southern California city. My locals literally Photoshopped the Oregon project and dropped it down on top of a huge block of existing houses and smaller businesses to show us the face of “progress”.

Fortunately the Oregon wines have developed into excellent mindbenders, and I was in the passenger seat of the truck on the drive back to the room, sparing the black leather jacketed coffee drinkers my friendly shouts of shock and awe as we drifted back in the late evening.

I passed through Bend about 2-3 years ago to see what all the fuss was about. Near as I can tell the big thing it has going for it if you’re like me and don’t ski is proximity to outdoor sports and occasional big time entertainment. Maybe I was just hot and tired, but at the time I thought I would prefer Klamath Falls if I had to make a choice…ooops…forget I mentioned that secret spot! Ahem.

What is a New Millenium Bendite? Is it someome from out of State that recently moved to the area?

I’m always puzzled by how much animosity people in the PNW have toward Californians. The reason why our breaks are so crowded is because people from everywhere else – including the PNW – moved here for work. I’m a native San Diegan, and have seen a huge population change in my community over the years.

You folks should thank us for relieving the population pressure on your area, and give us all the waves we want when we travel there.

This is WONDERFUL. Now I can begin my new book,“Secret Surf Spots of the Pacific Northwest.” Could you please post detailed maps to help me further?

This thread is hilarious. Nels, you and resinhead always crack me up. I thought there were two surfers in Bend. Mr. Pipeline and me when I visit Bend a couple times a year. Surfers in Portland? That’s committment. Keep it going. Mike

Nice…

We may be a little oversensitive in WA because we have different beach ownership laws than the rest of the west coast, maybe the east coast as well. Imagine the whole coast of the state is Hollister Ranch and you get whatever is left over or whatever the land owner that owns it will allow you to pay to surf there…

Wow scary. Who are you tough guy?

No mortgage would be great…Oregon wines are definitely mindbenders, the beer aint bad either…The waves are sharky and cold and fickle, the job market aint that great and there isnt any really good mexican food.

If you want sunshine, amazing amounts of waves, the ability to hear your neighbors toilet flush, a descent job, a huge morgage, amazing mexican food, and all kinds of friends(or non-friends)to surf with move to San Diego. There the real secret spots out, dont forget to bring sunscreen… and you wont really need your rain gear or 5/4/3.

SEE? back at the beginning of this thread, i said that PNM surfers were a bit ‘grumpy’ about their waves. what they got is semi known just like the rest of the country…good wine, nice beerrs , good waves and o yes, some sharks and stuff…remember what a local is----" local, a guy who hasn’t figured out how and where to travel to yet"----mickey the mongoose

I wouldnt say we are grumpy, we just dont have the time for the Portland kooks, the valley kooks and the rest of the wankers that want to come up here and get waves.

Think ‘Hollywood by the Sea’, not brodown hodown SC or SD.

The OSP itself is a bastion of these motherfuckers, hated by every local on the coast. They spill spots, pull over anywhere they see rigs with racks, they are simply scroungers with no will of their own but to fuck our spots up with filth.

They know their place and it isnt at my spots.

Fosta-------------I basically said the same thing to the boy/girl in a PM, but I admitt I said a little more than that. As I get older I seem to exercise a little more self control. Hope I run into you up here sometime. Lowel/Little Hawaii
