Water Based Clear Coat For Air Brushed Blank?

I am in the process of air brushing a new shape (US Blank) and have a difficult trip to the glasser’s shop and want to protect the paint work for the trip. Is there a waterbased clear coat I could spray over the art work to protect it for the trip, and that would also be compatible with the poly resin? There’s a few water based sprays like MinWax Polycrylic. Is there any reason not to use that product?

You can use a clear acrylic from any art supply store. Others have used grout sealer thinned with distilled water. I understand that over time it can yellow if you do not use distilled water. i often use rattle can acrylic clear to seal paint before I back tape on airbrush work It would be more cost effective if you used the sealer and used your gun to shoot a clear coat. Do not over due the clear as it will effect bond of the fiberglass to the blank. nbsp;

Behr floor and Tile Sealer.  Acrylic/satin finish.  Essentially what you would pay much more for at the art store.  Can be used as a thinner for Acrylic paints.  Often used as a satin finish on sanded hot coats.  Sold only in gallons for around $28 at Home Depot.  There are other similar products sold at Smart&Final etc.  Lowel

Thank you for the comments. It seems like the MinWax PolyCrylic should work fine as it too is a clear water based acrylic. I’ve got a Micheal’s nearby that I will check as well.

Looks like Krylon makes a clear acrylic as well.

Am I overthinking this or what?  By a diificult trip to the glasser, do you mean it could be exposed to rain on the drive over & your afraid of it getting wet  & the colors running? If thats the case, just go buy $5 of plastic sheeting from HD & wrap it up. Or wrap it in bubble wrap & stick it inside your car on the drive over.

I think it was Artz that gave a little trick to thin your paint with Future Floor finish. It really helps keep the colors down especially when doing intricate designs with multiple masking tape applications. Then you don’t risk affecting the bond on your lamination.

It’s a 9’ - 0" board and won’t fit in my old Camry. I have soft racks and it requires a bit of towel wrapping and finessing to keep the paint intact at the strap points for the 35 mile drive to San Diego. Last time the board lost some paint in a spot that’s not easy to see but wanted to protect the paint better this time if possible.

Hmmm… Thin the air brush paint with the floor finish? I’ve got some old Saltillo tile sealer - that might work. I can do a test on some scraps. Thank you for the idea(s).

Better check the chemical make-up of the Saltillo Sealer 1st. Might have some petrochemicals in it that will melt the foam. The Future Flooor finish is readily available at most local hardware stores. That’s where I got mine.

Good luck.

Thank You!!

For those in the know with Future floor finish, does the below website ring true?

Seems to show the name changes and and alternatives.

Thanks!

Great info thanks again

Same stuff exactly.

Crystal clear.

And works well as a paint thinner/ bonding agent.

Thanks Barry!
