Water based paint and full-on production

Hello all you American sprayer/ airbrushers !!! I’m seeking to cut costs with spray paint , as I spray loads of boards… I regularly work with petro - based paint because it dries quickly, therefore suiting the mass production levels of some of my clients… but we all know that the fumes are toxic, the colours are expensive and it plain stinks…I’ve worked with water based paint on some of my own special artwork sprays, but find the drying time restrictive for use in production, even when, at the time, I was working in sub Tropical Byron Bay. However, i’m under the impression that American laws prohibit the use of the thinners (Petro) based paint. Is that true! If so, there must be loads of guys out there with experience in dealing with water based paint? The other issue is the suggestion that the water-based paint won’t cure properly in cooler climes like here, near Bell Beach in Victoria Australia, and thus cause delamination of glass. What can you tell me of Americam methods?? Heater Boxes? Appreciated. Check out the website. http://www.speedneedle.com.au

No it’s not illegal, it’s just got enviormental resrictions involving costly filtered ventilation such as for automotive painting. Anyways water base is slower drying yes but most work with several boards at once rotating between coats of spray while drying in room temperature(using top quality automotive masking tapes). Red/Black/Dark blue are prone to crystalization under the Lamination so must be applied lightly/dryed between coats. No stinky fumes and water cleanup alone is enough to make the switch to water based paint for most airbrushers of boards! A hairdryer and good masking tape is helpful. Enjoy your health while you can!!! A good painter like you could get a job here no problem!!

…Fans man, fans…oh yeah de-natured alcohol, some use lacquer thinners…me, Future floor sealer is my mixing agent, dries wikki-wikki.Herb

Herb, you NEVER cease to amaze me! Floor wax, you go boy! Yeah the hair dryer is a very useful tool!

Howzit Herb, I agree, A good air flow is the best drying agent. When I paint I shut the doors to the room, after spraying I open them wide and let the air flow through. I’ve also found that the acrylic thinner I’m using now tends to make the paint dry faster than when I used water for thinning the paint. Aloha, Kokua

…I started with water, then the thinners, then the alcohols. …One day,I decided to stick my neck out there again by adding a little future instead of water, bla, etc, etc.to my paints.THEN I was using it for sealing the painted blanks,as the spray can stuff I use to use got pulled from the shelves two years ago,and now days???lets say that If I have enough Future floor sealer,I won’t use more than 30% water in my mix ,usually less, much less…and of course it dries faster,I would bet faster than the thinners I have used in the past…Herb

Guys, you’re running away from me!!~! firstly, what the Fuck is “Future?” And what of this mixing some water, some whatever? remember, we aussies are strange!Appreciate the responses! http://www.speedneedle.com.au

…No problem you’re just 10 years or so behind. But seriously,Future is a acrylic floor sealer for no wax floors. It’s clear, and mixes well with paint.Herb

Josh- That’s some insane artwork on those boards!!!.. Unreal.

JOSH, YOUR WORK IS NICE MAN! IF YOU CAME TO THE STATES, YOU WOULD FIND WORK NO PROBLEM.

Herb, I think you are kidding…Australians are further than us when it comes to surfboards…

…As far as surfboards ,yeah but painting,I don’t think so.Herb

…Hannifin???Herb

…Then how come they still ride tris,if they’re so far ahead???Herb

Go visit a shaping and glassing facility in AUstralia and then check one out in the US. However, I feel we have the greater share of the market. Remember Simon Anderson…

Howzit Pat, Last year Roy Powers returned from Aust. with a Simon Anderson shaped board. It was glassed and hotcoated but that was it. He brought it to me to plug and sand since I’ve done several boards for him. The board was a mess, resin slopped everywhere, untrimmed fiberglass hanging off it. I had to sand it and rehotcoat just to get it to a safe workable state. I understand it only lasted Roy about 1 1/2 months before it self-destructed. In my personable opinion if that is the standard in Aust., I don’t see how they are ahead of us when it comes to board construction. Seems like they don’t have much finesse and apply their animal tendencies to the art of board building. Aloha, Kokua

l recon that if we are all using the same materials, the only difference is going to be the personal abillity of the craftsmen and no matter what country they are from if they are good at what they do it shows in their work. l know some great glassers, but they dont work for big named labels, they usually work for the mid sized labels so that it allows them to go surfing, the way it should be!! not stuck in a glassing shed all day sucking in fumes for some money hungry glory hunting manufacter.
