Waterproof speedometer

The first unit was taped onto the deck of the board , it washed off and was lost, it was a fast session too, (on vid D11-9)

I’m getting leery of the radio waves entering my body so am going to attach the unit to the nose of the board (this will give a better chance of a reading while in the tube lol) this should be ok as even if the board is lost it will never reach a high speed without the weight of the rider on board.

Our results have been really consistent btw, apart from one spike of 2000 kph plus

Comp wise a speed comp could be held in a variety of ways during existing heats. . . it wouldn’t interrupt the normal procedure and could be optional to enter, maybe highest speed for the whole comp. . . serendipitous much like a best tube but that’s the nature of surfing. Might have to have some top of the line gear though otherwise we might have Slater suing Irons over a spike or something !

Cheers

.

Thanks Mike

Roy…

Yes, your body does absorb the (micro-power) GPS signals–just put your thumb over the antenna area of the Gecko and watch the unit indicate the loss of satellite signals as they’re absorbed by your thumb. But the radio waves are present any time one or more GPS satellites are in your ‘view’. It doesn’t depend on the presence/absence of a GPS receiver. Best (least expensive) ways to avoid them when out on the ocean include: (1) staying way back in the tube, (2) spending most of your time underwater (e.g. duck diving), or (3) if you’re primarily worried about brain exposure, with the high frequencies and short wavelengths involved lining your helmet with a conductor (e.g. aluminum foil) would probably work. Or you could just keep your head underwater

I see, because it is only a receiver it’s ok, it’s transmitters like cellphones which are the problem.

Have just bolted a gecko container on to the back of my Gath Lid, it can’t go on top because that’s where I carry the board

Will post a picture soon

Roy i had to have a tutu with that pic, let me know if you want it taken down.

That’s Primo Hunty except that you might want to dial the skin tones up, the Bloke looks a bit cadaverous.

Cheers

I was speaking of Slalom waterskiing, I ski in the 20s because I am a novice, but I’ve seen a friend of ours going fullout and falling, he did a few flips before settling. The force ripped his foot right out of the boot. Small chop is very hard to handle at those speeds. Anything over 4" or so just pounds you. I’ve fallen off of tubes at that speed, and you get very sore after a few falls, I’ve hurt my neck tumbling off of flipping tubes.

I’ve tubed at 35mph before behind a boat, and it’s dang fast. Falling HURTS. That’s faster than slalom skiers go.

Uhm, I think that would be a fairly techical slamom skiing. Recreational alpine skiing WO the gates you can go much faster. Downhill skiing, double that speed and then some. Still, it sounds damn fast on a surfboard. Although highly irrelevant as it’s a very personal thing, anyone go eyewatering fast on a surfboard? I’ve never been close

Håvard

This IS a classic thread

LOL

Here’s the GECKOHEAD

One Sistema plastic snaplock container with ‘O’ ring from the supermarket $1.99. . . this box just happens to fit the Gecko201 perfectly.

Four bolts secure it to the Gath Blokelid

It felt weird drilling holes in my lid, like something Al Pacino might be guilty of.

A bit of Duct tape just to preent the clips from opening and we’re away

.

roy i reckon that will leak, id keep putting them in bags as you have done previously as well, just in case.

this takes the cake as the funiest thread on swaylocks

ever

actually

havent heard much about the mount reef recently

i got the impression it was starting to appear as bit of a dead horse

but heres hopeing

Rooster…you got any extra balsa or paulonia lying around? Maybe I can take up a Norcal collection…

What about Cedar ?

Or Redwood ?

Looks like Old Roy has parked his RV

and is in the Plant/Outdoor section at Walmart!

BTW, I own a Hummer and a Rolls Royce and live in a mansion with greek statues…pics coming soon!

As long as you’re not a certain trashman from Newport who lives in a doublewide!

I’ve been watching this thread with a giant grin as well. I think you should build one of Roy’s speed machines Benny. I’ve wanted to but am extremely limited by space for building and storage once it’s done. Just had so sell my other shortboard just to make room for my new one with the Surftrux. The only other thing that’s really held me back is that I can’t figure out where in the world to surf a thrusterbuster around here. Roy, you sure seem to have an outstanding understanding for how your boards move in a crowd, but I can just imagine really hurting someone with one of those things. Maybe at Its beach, where the canoe guys sometimes surf? Anyway, I’d love to see one built over here. Something along the lines of the squidtail? Care to give us dimensions and outline for your fastest board Roy? Just for an idea of what someone over here would be getting into.

Keep it rolling.

Pat

let me throw a spanner in the works: i’m less interested in speed than i am in joy. is there a device out there that measures happiness?

i don’t want to be the fastest surfer, i just want to be awestruck, alive, inspired, appreciative, grateful.

at the end of the day, it’s only surfing.

RUN!!! ITS THE ROY-BORG!!!

we are the roy-borg you will be assimilated, prepare your tunnel fins for high-speed boarding

ROFL!!!

Go get 'em roy! Must see the video!!

yes… it’s called a smile.

Forget building the board… I think there’s only one shaper qualified to make those at the moment. How about a field trip to Roy’s neck of the woods instead. Then we can see for ourselves how phenominal these boards are… clear up this matter once and for all.
