Picked up an old Weber Pintail. Roughly 6’0 FAT as all hell. The guy I got it from has the fin, however the top half of the fin is cracked, thus worthless.
the fin is made out of plastic and screws into the base of the finbox with two screws one in the front and one in the back. On the base of the box in the board, it says "WAVESET. I have heard that term somewhere before so i am assuming that this is the name of the fin system
Would anyone know where I could locate another fin???
Here is a link to a guy who is selling reproductions. Only problem is is that he is charging $150 per fin. Seems quite steep, but I am not really into the whole vintage scene
I was searching for a WaveSet awhile back and they can be pretty tough to come by. Even most of the ones you will find will be in a pretty brittle state due to uv damage.
Break out the phone book and start calling shops. Sometimes they’ll get an old beater and they’ll save the fin and box. Surfer Supplies in Ocean City is a good starter (609-399-8399). I’ve also had good leads in VA shops. You’ll see one on e-bay once in awhile but they go for ridiculous amount (even with cracks, leash holes, etc).
Maybe try copying what’s left, or fixing those cracks until you find an original. Recently I wanted an old Hobie style bolt-thru and didn’t want to pay 150.00 either. See below.
Unless you’re a purist, I’d put a normal fin box in. I assume that you want to ride the board, and using the original box isn’t going to give you many options in tuning it. Weber pigs are of fun, and I’ve seen a lot of variation in fins used (length and style). Call Weber at (949) 366-6398 and ask Corey what he recommends.
What I’ve done if you don’t want to spend $150 for a fin to fit that box. Get an old fin you like. Pick up some mold release and resin.Rub the mold release into the box. Tape off the are around the box.Make sure walls of box are smooth .So new base will pop out.Pour resin into box slide fin down into resin. Tape fin level .If you want to keep base the same color as fin add some pigment. Also make sure old fin base is clean. You should be able to tap new fin out after resin sets up.Use old fin as pattern to line up and drill the new holes. Sand to clean up edges. Good luck Gordon
