Wavy Hulls

Probably wouldn’t work with a surfboard … but you never know!

Man. Combine that hull shape with some tuberculated “whale” fins and you’ll have a surfboard that’s pretty freaky looking… maybe it would even scare off sharks.

Keith, I don’t know about the whale fins but I had a friend who used to build wavy hulls in his backyard…unintentionally. More seriously, you would need to do the physics for the relevant speed and dimensions.

yes… although the purpose of this was to reduce wake damage…not sure that’s particularly relevant to surfboards…

Reducing the wake has to reduce drag. The main problem I think would be the lack of a constant board/water profile since that would need to be relatively constant to set up the inteference pattern.

“reducing the wake has to decrease drag.”

Does it always?

In this case I’m not sure. If you’re decreasing the wake by making non-coincident peaks, and doing that by making the hull “lumpy” it’s possible that you’re increasing drag…
