Wax alternatives?

As Many of you know, I am shaping a 13’ stand-up paddle board ( which I also hope to ride as a regular board occasionally). The idea of waxing It has been an arm numbing thought. Are there any altenatives to wax that are worth considering? Obviously we’re not talking a super high performance board here. I would want to knee paddle when not standing so it’s gotta be easy on the knees.

Unless you plan to duckdive that monster, slipcheck the nose to 6’ back.

Buy some EVA, use it for the center section, and wax the tail.

Nuttin like wax when you need traction, and nuttin easier on your body than wax.

you can make a tread deck with hot coat and flyscreen

What does slipcheck mean?

What is EVA?

Well, back in ancient times, before TV or automobiles…

Grump…

Slip check was the spraycan grit, getting a sailboard like deck for traction.

EVA is closed cell foam, like your trac pads, for cush and grip.

Textured deck is a layer of 4oz lammed on with hotcoat resin, squeegeed dry, and ready for non slip.

Sailboards use an acrylic dust/acrylic brush on to get their gritty decks.

You can use sugar/salt and resin…thin coat resin, sprinkle light S/S coat, let cure, go surfing, avoid ants.

Full length 10 log pads cost about $90 retail.

I’ve never used it. Is there traction with the EVA?

Hi dense EVA is what a typical tail trac pad is made from. It’s grooved/cut for better traction and cool looks. Low dense is what yoga/pilates practitioners use, and works fine, not absorbing water. Also used for kayak seats.

Moderate traction, hence the grooves/cuts. Look at windsurfboards.

Theres this thing called hula dek, that I found on a website in the archives. Its supposed to be a permanent non-skid fluid that you roll on.

There is a paddleboarder in my area who has applied evenly spaced “dots” of clear silicone caulking to the deck of one of his surfboards that he uses for paddling. It gives a soft. non-abrasive surface to kneel on and allows the original deck color and graphics to remain.

Ride on, Tom

precisely what i was going to recommend! (and i was even going to send you to SurfSource for it).

i haven’t tried it yet, but supposedly it’s a permanent wax alternative that is completely clear (so your board looks great all the time without wax chunks all over the deck). and it’s pretty inexpensive, too. give it a shot…and lemme know what you think of it!

so what you wanna ride it or screw with ship on the deck …wax the damn thing and use it ! …with a can of hot water and a bar of parafin its waxed in seven minutes call it beach stretches or beach yoga …arm numbing?..temper your coolidge and get down and grovel with some wax for christs sake what’s the deal more stuff is more stuff the traction applied prematurely is stupidly placed…the value of the wax is that you can replace it or remove it …that option is a little more involved with glue on krap or spray on crap as a mater of fact a little 180 wet or dry is enough for some in history try that…ambrose…or maybe some Prada yacht shoes with speed nobbies on the bottom they are pricy but memorable in the boat house

ps .please dont become a nuisance in the line up at regular surf spots… as I believe this trend is likely to lead to… please opt to surf spots neglected by contemporary surfboards,I would hate to be condemned by inappropriate association with the discourteous enthusiasts on excessive boards…stop by the house lets talk about the paddle and it’s evolution from the club and guarding it from devolution…respectfully…Ambrose Martin Curry III .Commode Door,Waipouli Yacht Club Waipouli Kauai …dishing out a little ship

I’m with ambrose… I have a 12’ tandem board and waxing it up doesn’t give me any arm strain… gives you time to check out the surf…smells good…

PS you know in the very early days guys used to wax their feet instead of their boards!

Hi keith my new mac is in the air between here and los angeles I’ll be up and at it soon…whooo!!and the winds are north and offshore…ambrose…I still have to deal with photos from sept sway at sandollar but my mental photo of that good one you caught is in the mental circuts forever

yup- mine too Ambrose. both the right from white canoe, and the left from the other side of the bay. Isn’t it funny out of millions of waves, how a few just imprint themselves in your memory?

If anyone ever figures out how to digitize & print those mental images, he’ll beat Bill Gates in net worth! Maybe on your new mac, eh?

much aloha, missing the islands (but at least we’ve got a swell running!)
