wax removal

Paint scraper, I think Oneula mentioned using foam dust to clean up the rest.

Blowtorch, petrol, peel the glass off the deck and reglass…sorry couldn’t help it…

Plastic scraper to remove as much as possible then white spirits, this will remove any residue and leave your board completely wax free.

I assume you are talking about surf wax from a board… he he…

I use a cd case cover snapped in half, scrape the goo and then wash the board with warm soapy water and a rough sponge.

Sparks:

Any chance you could try to translate “white spirits” into Amerenglish? Ethyl/isopropyl alcohol? Acetone? The ectoplasm emanated by ghosts conjured at a really friendly seance :?>

The kind of solvent you use to clean your brushes with after painting with solvent based paints. (I don’t know the american word for it, it’s called -weirdly enough- “white spirit” in France, too…)

hot sun [briefly !] ,

plastic scraper ,

then turps ['mineral turpentine ’ here …no idea what that would be in seppo …? “denatured alcohol” ? , or some other gobbledegook , no doubt ? ]

ben

scrape bulk of wax off with suitable plastic scraper so as not to scratch, then use a cloth with “mineral turpentine” to rub and remove any residue, then use different cloth with methylated spirits to remove any oily residue left by mineral turpentine, otherwise the new wax will not stick as well! the methylated spirits residue will evaporate off very quickly and leave the board sparkly clean and wax free.

but wait there’s more… order now and get a free set of steak knives!!!

White Spirit is a trademark for a petroleum distilate. The generic term is solvent-nafta.

some other names:

Stoddard solvent, Varsol, Exxcol, Hydrosol, Shellsol, Solvesso, White Spirit.

Generally it is used as substitute for terpentine.

Keep it WELL away from your polyester catalyst (or any other oxidizers for that matter!) , they don’t like each other.

“Mineral Spirits” in the US. A less flammable & less toxic alternative to Turpentine (Wikipedia).

It’s unfortunate that we live in such a solvent crazy world. The less of the stuff we use the better IMHO. It’s completely unnessesary to use solvent to take wax off a surfboard.

If you just get the board a little warmed up in the sun shine an old CD disk works great to scrap 95% of the wax off. It won’t scratch the board either. A leg off a pair of your gal’s worn out panty hose full of foam dust with ends tied off gets ride the next 4.95%. Soap and water will take care of the rest.

Mahalo, Rich

We have but one thing to pass on to our children: The environment.

I don’t use any solvents. I just use some good old Corn Meal. It does not hurt me and does not hurt the rest of the world. Or as my son would say it is organic.

I just

1- leave in the sun for a short while (if sun is available)

2-scrape off wax with wax comb staight edge.

3-pour near boiling water over remaining wax and scrape again

4-clean up anything remaining with toothpaste or rubbing compound using one of those sponges with the rough green stuff on one side (please excuse the overly technical scientific name)

5- admire shiny like new surface.

There is NO need for any solvents or harsh chemicals.

cheers

Use the wifes hair dryer…Works great

a little time under the sun to soften things up. scrape. then remove the remaining residue with foamdust packed into the end of a stocking. ever heard of the “pickle” wax remover? – same thing.

Mate, the idea of white spirits being from friendly ghosts had me pissing myself. White spirits are a turpentine substitute ,others in this post seem to know it’s across the pond name. However I feel I’ve had the backs of my legs slapped for using solvent unnecessarily, I’ll try not to in future.

Salut Balsa,

do you know what the solvent “Essence F” you have in France is exactly (chemical wise). I found this was the best wax remover ever, better then white spirit or turpentine. would be great to find it outside of France (maybe even down under!) even if might not be 100% organic…

cheers Zimmi

Me too.

Sunny day, like around noon. Go to a beach where theres sand. Leave the board waxside exposed to direct sunlight until wax begins to melt. Wipe sand on melted wax. It will absorb the wax and easily wipe off. Polyurethane foam dust or wood saw dust will also work if you’re not near a sandy beach. Forget the solvents or the putty knives- that way too much work.

  1. Grab a cold beer.

  2. Place board in sun, wax up.

  3. Open beer.

4 Drink the beer.

  1. Srcape wax off with plastic spatula.

  2. Open another beer.

  3. Drink it.

  4. Wipe board with old beach towel.

  5. Have another beer.
