Ways to use up my old polyester resin

After going through my glassing shed I realized I have three gallons of poly sanding sanding resin and no laminating resin. I have been trying to use up and recycle all my old junk on my last few projects. I am planing to use epoxy in the future so I don’t want to buy any more polyester resin. My friends come over and fix their boards and leave their left over resin, mostly sanding resin. This board was left in the shed after attempt to put it back together.

I Had to cut off about 4" of resin soaked foam to start the repair.

Then I fixed It Neira style using Elmers Ultimate glue,1/16 balsa jig, and all sanding resin.

A lot of sanding with no lam resin, but it looks cleaner in the end.

Resin swirls are fun and they use up a lot of resin .I gave the board back to the guy at work who had left it in the shed in 2002, he was stoked! What other ways-projects can I do to use up this sanding resin? Ian

fin panels???

Hola,

Glad to be helpful.

Nice repair.

a clear table with stuff floating around in it

or a toilet seat

or you can be boring and make fin pannels…

how about some resin tailblocks?

…resin fiberglass/foam tailblocks, like Im doing…check the archives…

I may try all of the above and a plywood surfboard shaped growth chart with resin swirls for my boys. My first resin swirls were inspired by Austin. I love those resin toilet seats with the coins in them. Rasta the rasta fins and resin tail blocks are cool (reminds me of plastic shop in school) And I am going to start making some fin panels.

Thanks Ian

resin swirl skateboard deck …

Work bench swirls are fun. People trip out when they come inside my work shop.

if you have a bunch of cloth too you could do a solid glass skate deck, top layer swirled.

Make pre-made balsa skins for sandwich boards. Lay out your 1/16" or 1/8" balsa pieces in big rectangles on your workbench - enough for the max. length & width you’d need. Tape the joints & flip the taped-up panels. Lay down a single layer of 4 oz E. Laminate with your excess poly resin…very dry. Its easy, because you’re working completely flat - no curves, no laps, etc.

Make as many of these as you can buy wood for…when you stick 'em to EPS you’ll use epoxy with the glass underneath, but the poly will be completely cured - use that side for the outside and it’ll never effect the EPS foam. Put together your balsa rails and glass the rails with poly again - or lay another lam on the deck side (epoxy or more poly) and generously lap the rails. Then, hotcoat & gloss - also with poly.

You can even stick those skins to the EPS with foaming PU glue if you don’t want to buy any epoxy yet.

I know, I know … I’m one of the Kool-aid drinkers. But that’s because I don’t want to buy or use poly resin…you already own it - might as well use it to build some nice boards… Totally fine to use over EPS if you shield the core with enough balsa & epoxy or pu glue…

Oh dear, the wife and kids just went out of town for three days and my 14$ blank is shaped, balsa rails on, and my skins cut out. And Elmer’s Ultimate is my favorite adhesive in all the strength tests I have done. I may be in trouble.

I just need to wire my refridgerator pump auto shut off switch and a hook it up to my old air compressor tank.

The only problem is I can still hear Bert in my head telling me about poly failing after flexing. I know CMP used poly on the outside and I have fixed a lot of Surftech’s with poly after sealing with epoxy. What do you think?

Ian

Well…I’ll tell you what I think…

Your surboard will be fine. But your free time will never be the same  God knows there’s no swell today, so you might as well get those skins on…
