Wegener's EPS Alaia Review

Has anyone tried the Tuna? I gave it a go and had a really fun time. I know some might consider it a mismatch of concepts: new technology applied to an ancient craft, but functionality-wise, it was a blast.

We did a little review of it, thought you might find interesting.

“It was killing me to think that the ancient Hawaiian style of surfing
may disappear again,” Wegener told me. It’s actually been a highlight of
my professional life to recreate and discover the whole separate
universe of principles that these surfboards work off.”

Thanks for posting that.

I’m super keen to try one.

Where’s the review though?

Tell us the nitty gritty of paddling and riding the Tuna please.

What were the conditions you tried it in? ie 1-2’ offshore, hollow zippers with some push or 2-3’ onshore, lumpy close-outs in the shoredump?

Did you ride it prone or stand up and so on?

Which one did you ride 5’er or 6’er and what are your stats?

His brother Jon is making some really nice foam Alaias stateside…EPS, paulownia rails (and deck) with epoxy…I think he’s also working with the surf sap now too so you can have the uber roots eco surfboard.

It paddled like a fish. No trouble paddling…I’m pretty sure I tried the shorter version at Cardiff on a knee to thigh high day, but it was still peeling…and after making adjustments to the feel of an alaia in general (ie it has no fins and always wants to 180…) it became really fun and I got “the slide” feel the alaia is designed for.
