were to EPS foam in nz ?

hey so i was planning on buying so EPS foam to make a blank out of. I when down to forman building ltd in hamilton and they had three grades of EPS foam sheet. i asked for eps#2 or #3 but the guy said they called it by a differnt name. it was; standard , heavy and very heavy grade, they all had different weights per cubic meter.I am guessing that that is the same as #1 #2 and #3 ESP?   can anyone over here confirm this guess before i buy any sheets?

cheers antony

.

give me a ring i had a photo how to but all pics are deleted from compsand. blanks cost about 35$ each. use 5 minute epoxy from adtech. buy a 300 wide by 1000 deep block and hotwire the rockers, pointless to do just one.

hey all i know is i am loving making boards i do not care if people think they are just " amature boat builder toys"  i enjoy hands on learning and i am stoked to "build" not "shape" a board if thats what its called.

i have been a carpenter for 13 years, had worked and lived in nz and in the USA and have been lucky enough to work under some very good builders and joiners and right now wood and wooden constuction is what i know and what am good at. So you guys are right i am "not a surfboard shaper" hey but is that not part of the point of this web site for guys like me to get advice and help from guys who have spent years shaping.

i will most likely never be more that a weekend/ garage board builder/shaper but i hope to try build/shape as many PU, expoy and timber boards as my funds will let me do and get as good as i can at it.

Don t you still get stoked trying a new board you made for the 1st time.

when it comes to resin brands i am at the mercy of that advice from the people i can buy it from .Hardcore surf has be real helpful and they put me onto kinetixs i did not know that you could get any other stuff.

bottom line i think i will give an eps board a go at "shaping " and when i can round up the cash will do a few PU boards and afew more HWS, hopefully i will learn more every board i do and be able to even more enjoy my surfing

i would love to be able to have someone show me/ teach me to shape but to be honest i do not know anyone one close by who  i could get to do that.  most guys shaping for a living do not have time to have someone asking lots questions and taking up there time  its hard for them to make ends meet anyway let alone have time to teach a newbe.

this thread has given a bit to think about cheers for imput so far guys

bennett blue . rusty plug.

why try and re invent the wheel there aint no eps blanks that shape like this with my 35 dollar wharehouse planer

im an amature tho look at all the planer marks maybe when ive done 4000 apparently you dont get as many planer marks

tar bro for digging up that video will give it a go in the weekend on my next board

Hey Antony,

I have used forman's eps, the light grade is good for compsand as its close to 1# i thinks its around the 15kg/m3  and the very hard one is good if you are doin a shaped blank for straight up glassin as its around the 28kg/m3 and has a relatively tight and well fused cell structure, which means it wont need a vent and wont suck much water when the inevitable happens. LOL

its a bit easier to shape too.

my advice is dont bother wth eps. it realy is a shitty foam to make surfboards with. trialing ixps at the moment, hard to shape tho . needs a barrel.

the lighter eps boards ride higher, chatter and have less inertia and less postive flow

if you really must use it, glass it heavy as. dont try and make lighter boards then polys

have a look boardbumps did up a quick chart for me

OH Silly....you're so silly.

Everybody know the best surfboards are made out of (Insert your easiest avaliable material here_______________).

I know, EPS sucks, Resin Research is crap, Spackle is for guys that cant tape drywall worth a shit, Microsoft is out to rule the world, Ford make POS trucks, Rusty sold out to "The Man", and  The TSA profiles people at the airport.

God save us.

Hi TS

See if there is a Styrobecks near you - they have everything from very light (12kg sqm - 0.75#) up and will cut it however you want it. I know they're in Akld and Wgtn.

The lighter grades really suck water if you ding it good.

I think light boards are just preference. I surf light eps-composite boards in Wgtn in extreme winds and chop and didn't find it much of an adjustment. They accelerate faster but lose momentum quicker.

I just lower the volume overall and in the rails and find they carve through the chop fine.

I often swap between a 4kg pupe boards and 2.4kg eps-composites in the full range of conditions and I'd rather have the lighter one every time.

Resinhead - thats GOLD right there,

Lets add poor surfboard performance has nothing to do with design - its all materials, Ooooh and colour.  I would type more but the spackle is gumming up my keyboard!

hi resin head

its arogance to assume that someone that has been developing surfboard foam for 40 years specifically for surfboards knows less about it then some c#nt that makes insulation panels!

eps is kinda a rubish foam IMO. shapes like rubish looks rubish and not many good surfers like surfing it.

i would be looking elswhere for composite cores at the stage

i have a question anthony why you want eps?

it aint better! its and alternative and not a very good one

i been surfing 6 to 8 hours a day 4 days straight over 100 waves or more six to 7 turns per wave

OMG its a bennet blue glassed 6oz bottom 6  4 deck

still imaculate except for a small ding on the rail from a re entry into the shorebreak on a shoulder wave. fixed it overnight! and surfed another 4 hours this morning in pumping 3 to 4ft offshore point break

if you want to learn to shape use bennets or midgets foam and glass with epoxy if you want them a bit lighter

but lighter boards are no better then heavier boards for average surfers

its a big wank. if you follow the composite path make sure you dont believe the bulshit. eps boards do fill with water and require a tedious repair time when they do

in other words impractical . surftech and firewire included

haaaa’‘’

paul these guys suffer post clark stress       eps is there security blanket

**       **Cover Up

skype u later 10ish your time. that blank was a second as well. its a very strong board and shaped like butter. rockers designed by pros u hardly have to touch!

the greatest performance gain any surfer can get is more volume
