reefs are reefs regardless where they are in the world, coral monsters with teeth that get sharper with every bite.
what type of wetsuits have you brought with you to survive tropical reefs?
i got scars all over, and i can’t take it anymore!

I hit the reef for the first time in febuary in Hawaii. I loved it. Hahaha. What water temp ? Why not just buy a 1.5 or 2 mil suit. Or a farmer John suit
uh. what’s a farmer john suit again?
out here in the tropics, our farmers are named juan, and they don’t get to wear suits! unless it’s a barong shirt hehe " )
cheers,
Tropical booties are thin and the neoprene (but not the nylon on the outside) has lots of little holes in it to allow more water to flow through. Might be able to find a wetsuit made the same?
You will be the hipest one outthere. I guarantee it !! Or get a power tophttp://www.altrec.com/nrs/hydroskin-farmer-john-wetsuit
yikes, that looks like it’ll never get through customs hehe
cheers,
that i’ll have to check, the only wetsuits sold out here are for diving. not the same, 'no?
Howzit surfiber, I didn't know they even made hem any more since they first came on the surfscene in the mid 60's. They start at about mid thigh and the top is like a tank top tee shirt and they are a 1 piece suit. After my first wetsuit that was a beaver tail, Igot a Farmer John. ALoha,Kokua
hi kokua,
dive suits are what’s readily available in these parts, i’m not sure if i can find the recommended 1 to 2mil thick wetsuits. just need something to ward off reef cuts
cheers,
A long sleeve spring suit is best.
howdy billy,
let’s say i don’t find anything of that sort here in manila, anything i need to watch out for if i get something pre-owned online?
Other than condition I would say size. The fit is the most important thing and every brand has a different fit so try getting a brand you may have used before and that you know what size worked for you or make sure the person you are getting the suit from match’s your size, weight etc… Also most suits can be cut at home. So if you found a nice full suit where you are you could always cut the legs off and re sew the seams at the cut so they don’t come undone and make your own spring suit. Just put the suit on first, mark it and then cut it.
Another option I have used is a wetsuit shirt and wetsuit shorts. Better than nothing.
thanks, billy!
seems it’s better to get a custom reef suit made using black neoprene sold here in rolls, more cost-effective that way
cheers,
If the water is warm enough where your at just go on craiglist find a 5$ wetsuit spring suit and ship it for 5$ holes won’t matter if you not looking for warmth
the main ripper at G-Land for over a decade, West Australian called Camel who stayed months on end, wore a full wetsuit to protect himself from the reef. Cut it off just below the knees and elbows…would become fairly shredded from reef gouges and tears…
In reef waters I like the Excel 1.5mm nylon finished (smooth rubber too slippery) long sleeve, good rib protection for paddling, great for vwind chill, super flexible with just enough rubber to help when making contact. And the larger online dive shops carry1-2 mil shorts that extend to the knees, which can be worn under extra long surf trunks…
for even more protection, just buy a 2 mil full suit on sale and custom cut it as you wish…
A used suit may have cooties.
Seriously though through mail order at: www.overton's.com they sell 2mm spring suits fairly cheaply. Or maybe a ploypro rash guard. Also, Aleeda will make anything custom you want.
