What!?? Another $#@% Windsurf blank thread?! Yes...

Scored six, yes six, free windsurf blanks off of craigslist.

Havent touched em yet, actually, havent even seen them yet.

They’re waiting for me on my Mom and Dad’s porch.

Mom and Dad dropped everything when I called and went and got em from up in the gorge, in the snow. Thanks!

Saw a little pic of them on the ad. No stringer, moulded/routed hole for skeg/centerboard, way too thick, rocker to make ya cringe…

Yep, Im gonna do it.

Sombody ask me what im gonna do about a stringer…

go ahead…

I see a hand there in the back…

Yes?

“What’re ya gonna do about a stringer? And those slotted voids?”

MMhhmm, now that’s a good question. I am gonna cut a rectangular plywood jig and align the blank on it, and run it through a table saw, remove the voids all together and narrow the overall width. I have about 500 board feet of 1"x6" cedar in the garage, I think I can fashion a stringer from that. Run it through the stationary planer to thickness, y’know… glue it up in the shop.

Another hand goes up…

“the blanks are thick, and the rocker is wrong. What about the softer center? You know you are gonna have to mow a lot of foam. You do own an electric planer, don’t you?”

Well, yes, yes, what about it? 6oz with a 4 oz deck patch, sez Ben Gunn. A planer…hmmm. No, but Steve does… I’m sure he’ll be a sport about loaning me a planer for a bit…

from the back of the room, he stands up. Clears his throat, and yells without raising his hand…

“Quit beating around the bush… what shape?! What shape?!!”

My God, thats the question… what shape indeed?

Go for it Stiffy!!

2 of these monsters

ended up being

Have fun…and good score…

Mind you, the word Catermaran comes to mind for 2 of them…

I got mine for $20 a piece.Shaped a gun and a super fat LB.

Both are magic boards.I have two friends that want my last 4"thick 8’7" blank.

Glue up an SUP superbeast blank with doorskin stringers.

Hey,

great project! I made this (board #2) from an old 80ies windsurfboard:

right where the fins are there was a gap (mast/skeg) in the EPS, i filled that with a block i cut out from the tail and glued it in with PU foam. Then shaped it, spackled and painted white, Epoxy resin tint on bottom… pictures don’t show how crooked it is

have fun, and post pics!

Voice from the back of the room, near the heater:

“Hey, since you’re going to cut it in half and glue a stringer in it, you might as well slightly modify the rocker at the same time, whaddaya think?”

Make that 3 friends. You can double your money on it!

Hey Craig - Sounds like a score. How long did you get? Let me know if you want to try checking out the shead, or… Are they poly/eps? Could save some time and mess w/hot wire if e/xps.

Taylor

Hey Taylor! How ya been? I’d still like to come check out the shed… Dunno about the blanks, they’re still waiting for me in PDX. Man, i have been high and dry for months. I swear I only got out a dozen times last year… pathetic.

balsa: When i cut 'em in half lengthwise to insert the stringer and get rid of the pre-fab voids, how would I change the rocker? Just by weighting the fore and aft sections while gluing them to the stringer? Hmmm, that’s an interesting idea… I wonder how far i could flex them before I start to have trouble mating them to the stringer?

Anybody try different width stringers? Seems like between 1/8" and 1/4" is standard, but what about 1/2" or 5/8"? It just seems like it might look pretty is all.

hey i was thinkin a good idea to change the rocker is desighn it on aku shaper program print it out tape it up and trace onto stringer material glue the finished stringer with new rocker between blank haves. then shape foam down to wood strimger . thats what i would do.
