So far I know about the conventional leash plugs in a black cup with a metal bar thing, the kinds where it’s like a lump of fiberglass with a whole in it for the string, and the ones where the string is tied on the finbox side and comes out through the top. I made a leash plug today with a circular piece of wood. I just drilled a hole through it and made some ridges to make sure it stays in the board.
What other kinds are there?
excuse the terrible sanding job, i’m still not 100% done with the board. It’s finished enough to be rideable but I still have to add another hotcoat to the bottom and sand the entire board down. I just couldn’t wait to ride the thing.
Leash plugs cost $1.50 plus tax.
I always make my own. I use white PVC end caps, with a nylon rod, or carbon fiber rod, set into the deck. Through the box is an excellent system also. Simple and strong. I also like a G 10 plate in the rear of the box, with a ''pigtail'' to attach the leash to. The latter system seems to reduce tombstoning to a significant degree, and keeps the deck clean looking.
I Like mine made out of dried monkey puss and dog vomit. 100% natural, easy to carve when fully dry. Then I wrap it in a 100% hemp & jute cloth, sealed with a water based linseed oil.
Whats up with the wood leash plug? Have you stress tested that thing yet? for god sakes man, the last thing you want is your plug yacking out when its 2x overhead, and your sucking air & crying for yo mama.....and the beach is still 400 yards to the inside. God I hate that, what a shitty feeling
I don't know about you, but the last thing I want to do is make a leash plug out of anything natural. I like Bills idea, but I'd up it to a kelvar cup with a titanium rod....that through bolts to the bottom of the board.
I guess i'm just a pussy that way, but I hate systems falures.
i just did that cuz it looks cool. keep in mind that the wooden plug is on a board that’s 4’5. i don’t think i’d ever ride it in overhead waves, so 2x overhead is out of the question. i’ve got other board for that. but i think for just fun chest high and under waves, the wooden plug will suffice. who knows, if it does rip/break off i’ll let you guys know about it!
i hope that wood is sealed before you get into the water with it
why do y’all tie them rope thingies to your surfboards anyway?
i dipped the wood in resin before i installed it so it should be water proof.
