What are the rules for making twin fins work?

An improvement and and update that no doubt works.  But not a traditional Twin and Bob Prearson could rip on any longboard no matter the fin configuration.   Pretty good surfer on shorter boards as well.

I’m with happy on preferring a wider tail for twins, but I’m not a ripper, just an old guy trying to sneak a few waves when the kids aren’t looking!

An offshoot from the original topic of twinnies, but still relevant:

My first twinzer shape was for a friend who wanted a twinzer longboard. It was before the internet was a good info source, as it is today, and FCS plugs still hadn’t been produced.

Word of mouth was my info source and lucked out to meet someone who knew something. (this isn’t Santa Cruz)  I was told that placement should be 1" for each foot of board length + 1" From the tail… So that’s 10" from the tail for a 9’ board

He also said; Leading fin 1" away from the trailing fin and toed in parallel or slightly outward.

That was all I got

I glassed the fins on and the guy aws happy.

A few years later he wanted another board and I tried his first one and it felt like I’d toed the fins in too much @ 3/8" So on the second board I changed it to 1/4" toe in.

Since then I’ve tried a few different shapes, from 7’ - 9’ and played with the placement formula and toe in.

I haven’t had a twinzer that was not surfable. But in every case when I removed the canard fins, and tried it as a twin, I didn’t like it because it was way too loose.

I’ve had an 8’ fun board that had a 14"RP tail and those fins were placed 10" from the tail and toed in 5/16" - That was good as a twinzer, Even though it was a deviation from the formula that I was given, originally.

What I’m getting at is that there is a lot of leeway on what will work with twinzers

They never fail to produce drive and better top turn speed than almost any tri fin that I’ve tried, regardless of placement.

I’m sure that Jobson has worked out the finer points of getting the most out of twinzers and I’ll give his formula a try as I am about to glass an 8’ twinzer over the next couple weeks.

Also , I’m understanding that the placement and toe in for twins and twinzers isn’t interchangable. So that rules out possibilities of surfing it as either/or… unless someone compromises.

Anyhow that’s my essay on this

Thanks for posting all the useful info

Well Happy Hippy says double foiled fins on or near the rail and no cant.  A true Twin should be under 7 ft.  So that would rule the Pearson Longboard Twin OUT when you talk about “True” or “Traditional” Twin Fins.
