Just a reboot to an old thread topic to check in and share some pics of any projects you have going on, are in the middle of, etc. Anything surf related.
Trying to figure out exactly how wide the tabs are on older Libtech RRIP fin boxes. I realize FCS 2 type fins can fit in them so I’m going to a shop tomorrow to get the dimensions, but I hear the RRIP fins fit best - probably just a touch over 5/16" wide - my guess is going to be 8.1mm.
I’m on Gran Canaria, need to finish designs of my fins and 3D print them here before I head to Lanzarote where I’ll be picking up a Libtech shortboard. Gotta print my fins while I’m here and am kicking myself for not bringing a measurement caliper.
Thank you swaylocks - probably have enough info thanks to this thread:
“The FCS2 tabs are 6 mm thick, 14 mm deep, both tabs cover 99mm, the front hook sits out 9mm in front of the leading edge at the base.”
Welcome to the forum Shackly!
Beyond the Coanda Channel work with @stoneburner , I am preparing to commence for a potential 9’-6" build.
If it’s just the tab thickness your after make them a bit thicker . All those fin bases are in the ballpark of 1/4 inch thickness / 6.3mm.
Thanks for the welcome Jrandy! Before I left Santa Cruz for this extended surf trip, I was surfing a 9’7" Flying Truck by @Halcyon and Bobby Ledesma. Incredible board, they put all sorts of ideas into it - no stringer just carbon fiber for stiffness, a Muñoz nose, almost 23" wide, reverse V out the back. I’ve got some decent footage of it, must post.
Thanks Jr, I’ve got an STL of a FCS2 box and I’m getting 6.9mm with it… being 3D printed should be easy enough for me to sand 0.3mm off each side of the tabs if needed, but if the box is 6.9mm wide I guess I’ll be picking up some surf stickers haha.
It won’t be easy to get it right at first try anyway, there’s so much inconsistency to printer calibration, slicer settings and so on…
I see you are prepared with stickers and sanding paper…
Enjoy the trip!
Ran out the copy of the rocker for the 9’6" on the router table that I made for another Sways project about 10 years ago…there is an undersized spacer layer between the dark brown pattern and the lighter copy.
Removing a screw vent in a hollow wood surfboard & installing a breather vent instead.
And wondering if I can ride this 7 footer at almost 70 yrs old (been riding 8’ - 9’6” for a few years now).
-New sanding blocks, 36 and 80 grit self-stick, scrap plywood and pine handles. No CNC on these: table saw, chop saw, drill press, nail gun, glue, screws.
-Re-setting the stands due to failed buckets/concrete from being outside since the last board a few years ago…Figured out the internal supports angles and lengths with CAD but also made with a CNC-free workflow.
-PS better picture of final setup during first overnight of cure, showing weights and clamps and board to dial in level rail to rail. Bright outside light is from 6"/15cm of snow…
Did another XPS board from glued up pieces of cooler foam. Made a 5’ 2" x 18.25" x 2.4" for a standing wave pool. Made it for my brother for Xmas, and barely got it finished in time. Been dealing with bad Sciatica since late October. On bad days, I can’t walk without a cane and severe pain, on good days I can get around without much pain, but I limp some. Luckily this board was small and it required a lot of down time with all the cutting and gluing to make the blank. I would do a little rest. I tried using a flax fabric inlay on the deck because my brother wanted a stronger deck. I also just did a freehand pin line with a wide posca pen.
Long time i don’t come here!
I never stop buiding boards, in fact i build more because i add foilboards and windsurf to my projects. Lot of R&D around shapes and materials. Last project, a big midlenght or a small glider, use between longboard and gun for semi fat moving water crawded pointbreak waves. Big guy. 9’2×22"x3"1/4. 1.5 eps with 5mm cp stringer, 3x4oz warp glass bottom…
Harry - thnx for posting this. Good for Bernie he can still ride a 5-2!! Board looks amazing. The laminated deck should last forever. Sorry to hear about the back pain, sounds awful. Hope you can get some healing / relief.
Lemat - wow, I LOVE this board! Wish you had a whole thread start to finish. Is exactly the type of board I prefer for exactly the type of waves I surf. I’m guessing this will become a favorite.
Thanks Huck. Bernie enjoys going to the water park because after the second knee replacement last year, he has a hard time getting to his feet, and he is out of shape so paddling is an issue. He doesn’t have to paddle at the park and you start standing so it eliminates the popping up problem. Hopefully in 2025, we’ll both be back in the ocean riding our home break again. I haven’t had a chance to try the last hollow Balsa I made, and I bought a new 8’ board from my old shaper just before my sciatica flared up. The last board I got from him was 20 years ago.
Hope you had a good Xmas and get to enjoy the holidays.
Making some fin keys using 3/32" hex keys.
Used it as an excuse to learn CAD software and play with my 3D printer to make something useful from scratch. Needless to say it’s been a steep learning curve, but pretty stoked with how it’s going. 3D prints are coming out good, but ideally I want to make the handles out of wood. My friend has a cabinet shop and more nice kiln-dried wood scraps than I could ever use, but I wanted to get the shape/sizing/process dialed in first in CAD before I go through the hassle of making jigs to build the wood handles.
Just an excuse to make things by hand really. Going to give them away to all my friends and my son/daughters friends. Going to make a leash loop/paracord lanyard so you’ll have a finkey and spare leash loop all in one.
