What are your favorite keels for Mini Simmons?

What in your opinion are the best keels for a Mini Simmons shape? And what do you feel they contribute to the performance of the board? Can be Futures, FCS, whatever.

Thanks!

everyone has their own preference on fins, each fin has a different feel as well as each board, there is not best.

Understood.  That is why I asked "In your opinion" in the post.  Just trying to get some ideas from people who have ridden this board and experimented different fins.

Changed the heading to "what are your favorite keels" in order to avoid misunderstanding.

rasta keels are my favorito

Thanks for the reply.  I would imagine they are fast...but are they still loose?  Have you tried any others?

the K1 and K2 are ok at best in comparison to the rasta’s

50/50 foiled trad glass on keels are good in " perfect " waves but who is surfing a simmons in perfect surf , lol .

make sure if you use futures the install is done well , keels will seriously fatigue the boxes !

Good info.  Have heard good things about the Rastas.  Have you heard anything about bamboo 101's in the CI template?  Someone recommended them also.

what do you want your fins and board to do for you? do you want speed? looseness? ect. i have never tried the 101’s although i have tried the rastas and i really enjoy them, as well as twinzer setups i enjoy also. i think my favorite fin setup is the probox hammer quad, or futures controller; which is basically a split keel.

^^^Hoping for the best of both worlds.  Funny you should mention twinzer.  I am probably going to have extra single plugs put in so I can experiment with that.  Feel free to suggest twinzer setups as well as which one you prefer (twinzer or keel).  Not really interested in quads though.

i prefer fcs twinzer setup over quad, but i will be making the probox twinzer next so ill let you know how that rides. if you want fast and loose keels are good, they give you drive and have a slidey feel in my opinion, but this also depends on fin position.

Which twinzer set are you using?

Fin placement is a huge factor, of course.  I use Rainbow Fins ‘Doc’ template on mine.  I like those on my fishes, too.  They seem to work well for me.  I’ve also used a more traditional keel template from Rainbow, the turbo keels, and the Zippi’s which I modified into blades.  The Doc’s worked the best by far.  Don’t know why.  I wouldn’t hesitate to put a couple of double foiled Gepharts on one.  The most satisfying thing on any of my boards are home made fins when they work… Keels are not that hard to foil.  Well, it’s hard to do really well.  mike

Are the Docs single foiled?  They look similar to the CI template.

have tried many different sets to understand what works best for me and my version of the mini… plenty of varaibles such as placement, and all the differences within my mini shapes but I have got my 3 or 4 faves now and I now have a good understanding of them…
I have got my own template that is my fave ( which is hand foiled glass ) but aso use Shapers MC 02 keels…trialling a quad keel for Shapers as well but thats still ongoing…as said above, placement is such a huge varaible on these boards… what I dont like is the timber ‘D’ type fins, they feel horrible to me and dont deliver the life or performance I like…but thats just my opinion, some people may like them and to me a good flexing and well foiled glass keel feels sooo much better and alive compared to the timber keels I have surfed…

When you say D type, do you mean the fins that are shaped like a D?

Also, any pics of your board?  Would like to see fin placement.  Thanks!

Hi pittman,

There’s a picture on one of the Plaskett Creek threads.  The keels are not in it.  I moved them up to 6 inches because I wasn’t happy with my first two mini simms efforts with the fins way back.   mike

Ok, I'll try to find it.
