The recent [big guy looking to go shorter, wider on my new "daily driver"] thread by Makakilo got me thinking about very hollow wave board design for big guys. I am currently 5'10" and 220 lbs and have been surfing for over 20 yrs. When I was younger and 165 lbs I used to surf 6'8" - 7'0" X 18 1/4" - 18 1/2" X 2 1/4" - 2 1/2" on similar to Pipeline waves in the overhead to double overhead range. Lately it's been either my 9' X 22 1/2" X 3" longboard or a bodyboard for those waves.
I am planning to begin shaping some boards for me soon and I was wondering what big guys like Shawn Briley ride at Pipeline. I used to watch him ride Pipe on ESPN in the 80's and early 90's and I really admire his go for it approach to tube riding, the man seems like he has no fear. Anyway, anybody know the dimensions of his Pipeline boards and how tall and heavy is he. I would like to know this information as reference for a 4 board quiver I plan to build for real hollow waves.
What board dimensions do you guys recommend for someone my size (besides losing weight) for very hollow waves similar to Pipeline in the overhead range (3' - 4' HI) and then for double overhead?
