I’m looking to get “The Shine” on my new log and don’t want o order a whole gallon of Shurlustre online and wait for it…Is there a similar product available at automotive or WalMart-type stores that will give the same results? Thanks.
Order a full gallon of toothpaste?
Howzit tenover, You can use rubbing compound, get a can of the course and a can of fine and you are set to go. The thing about Shurlustre is it has both and works best, but a gallon goes a long long way.Aloha,Kokua
Scott,
Go to Advanced Color Coating in El Cajon (ACC) they got all sorts of cool stuff to polish out a board…some better than sure luster. 3M makes all sorts of stuff to polish out. I use the 3M perfect It series. Theres tons of grit, so just tell the guy what you looking for. ie…
here’s a sample of what to ask him:
Hello sir,…You see i just made this huge log in yellow, and made all my big scratches to little scratches, do you have something that would polish out the little 800 scratches and give me a color pop that would make Jack Reeves cry?
Tenover, The best combination I’ve found is to start with 3M Heavy Cut Rubbing Compound. It’s biege in color. Then finish off with Maguire’s #85 diamond cut. Auto parts stores, or bodyshop supply stores carry them.
If you want to go further, Maguire’s sells a number of progressively finer rubbing compound / polishes.

…to get the shine
the thing is with the sanding; I mean, sand very slightly.
sand with a super soft pad
ALL the 3M components are only good with 1000 grit up
but not so good with 600 grit scratches…
sand the rails only with 500 and 600
its enough
in the rails is very simple to get rid of the sanding marks
—most of the coarse rubbing comp are colored and stain the resin…
TOOTHPASTE…PASTE…not gells…99cents stores …get the cheapy stuff…it has more grit in it.Herb
I know I may get ridiculed for this, but…Herb, are you serious? I’ve heard toothpaste before this thread, but does/has anyone actually rubbed out a board with toothpaste???
Yup T,
It works fantastic !!!
I got a case of Peril Drops toothpolish sometime ago,and it’s even better.
After you’re done tripping over your tongue from the shine …Add some funiture polish to the works(light machine buff)…you won’t get wax to stick to it,but what a shine !!!
Tips from Jerry Mowe,Southshore surf and Roger Brucker ,AKA Cleanlines.
Some of the auto/industrial waterless handcleaners work well too !(not the alcohol sanitizers) . You know …Hand Goop, but the goop w/ the grit in it.Herb
Herb,
In 1959 I heard about one of the Groms at LJ Shores that rubbed his rails with Ipana tooth powder, so I tried it on a wood board I had just completed. It actually worked quite well. I later ‘‘graduated’’ to Pumice, followed by Rottonstone. The Rottonstone really gave a high polish, but was messy, due to its dark brown color. Tho most important ingrediant in this equation is ‘‘elbow grease’’. Any of the products mentioned in this thread, mixed with elbow grease, will work well.
Bill,
You being a hunter, and/or possibly a person that’s into lapidary…know about tumblers and different materials use to polish with.
I heard that the ancients to our “SPORT”(bold type=focused at those who think it’s not a sport)…used loose grits from sand to shells, bone, hulls of seeds/nuts,stones,shark teeth…heck teeth in general,etc.,etc.,etc…OH YA …shark skin too !!!
Elbow greeze…you bet ! Alittle hard work never hurt anyone…it only helps !
BTW…Saw Mark Burke the other day down at Bolsa 17.He said he rode your board in better than double overhead pier and was killing it !
He says what I say…,“People still don’t know what to think about your design ,but they all agree it works fabulous !”. Mark flipped the fins and prefers the set-up with the flats on the insides.
The board That I incorperated your design into, is finished…You should see the heads SPINNNNN!!!
lol…Hope to be in your neck of the woods next week some time…give you a call.Herb
Looking forward to seeing you again.
