What Chemicals To Use For Leashplug?

What chemicals do you need in order to have a strong leash plug? Where can you get these chemicals and how exactly do you install these leash plugs?

checmicals???..it’s just the same mix you’d use to install a box…and if you’re using a boxed fin, i always prefer to drill through the box rather than using a leash plug…plugs look tacky & ruin the look of a nice clean deck.

??? Call me stupid, but how does that go? Does that mean you drill through the deck or what? Show us a pic.

do a search for “drill box” or “box leash” or something like that in the archives and you should find plenty of info on it. basically, you drill a hole from the back of the box through to the deck, fill it with resin, let it cure, and then drill another smaller hole right through the middle of that. thread your leash rope through the hole and tie off a knot at the box end to keep it from slipping through. it looks nice and clean…no nasty leash cup. and it’s less work, IMHO.

I completely agree. Its got to be stronger, too, as you’d have to pull the whole finbox up through the deck of the board for it to fail. You can also pigment the resin white or black for a very clean look - just a little circle on the tail of the deck.

Joely,

If you’re using polyester resin, you want to use lam resin for setting the plugs (not hotcoat resin, which contains wax). I like to thicken it up a little by using a little cabosil or milled fibers. The fibers are supposed to be better as they add strength but I question that - I still add 'em anyway as it doesn’t hurt either. You can also add some pigment (color depending on the color of your plug) to the mixture to make it all look nice. You can get everything at just about any fiberglass suppliers that are listed in the resource section. I use www.fiberglasssupply.com.

Glassed loops are also a nice looking alternative to think about for clean look. Though if performance is the board’s priority, I believe the SRS plugs have the advantage over all:
