what did you learn about yourselves through shaping?

i learned

  1. that i like surfing better than shaping

  2. that i car more about the board i make for somebody else than i do about my own boards

  3. that my concentration skills can be further developed through shaping

  4. i like doing opposed to thinking about how things should be done.

  5. my sense of prose decreased

I have learned that I am insane and am a glutton for self punishment

other than that, Im cool

Made me realize that I’m a self flagellant. Please Sir, May I shape another?

I learned that I married a very, VERY understanding women.

I've learned i have no skill with power tools whatsoever, don't have a good "shapers eye", am impatient ( i rush towards the end so i can get the thing wet! ), and i really have no idea about board design.

On the other hand i've learned the beers i brew are waaay better than the boards i shape, and that balances it out.

One out of four aint bad Beerman. Stick with your strong hand, and you’ll always have mates.

i have learnt that.........   "just one more board and i will be happy"

antony

I have learnt that you never stop learning.

(Even though after the first hundreds boards you tend to think you have made it… Aaaaaah, but I was young…)

You end up knowing a lot of people in a lot of different trades that you can call on for help…Often a board is payment.

I learned that I like to make things.

I learned that if I don't shape for a few days I start to miss it.

I learned that there is zen in an electric planer.

  1. I learned that I like glassing and sanding more.

2.Appreciation for the guys who make my boards.

I agree with Mike Daniel about planer zen. I love planing blanks.Skinning… Foiling…cutting rail bands. After that I am over it. I hate hand sanding and finishing them. To me a blank with all of the rail bands cut is like art. I like seeing the shadow from the side lights lines before they get sanded off.

I also learned that no matter how hard I tried I still cant keep from tracking foam dust in to my truck and it will always blow in to my eyes when I am running 80 miles per hour at night.

i’ve learnt that i need to slow down a bit sometimes, with making boards to life in general,

i’ve learnt i need to think more before i ‘do’ on far too many occassions, this also applys to general living,

i’ve learnt that the frustration of building some guys ‘magic’ boards yet never being able to make one ‘magic’ for myself makes me strive to be better,

i’ve also learnt that simpler is generally better(most of the time).

I’ve learned that…

I have more patients and focus than I thought.

Compared to what there is to know, I know nothing.

The world is an imperfect place, and nothing worldly is perfect. Perfection can only be found in rare, fleeting moments in time… then they are gone without a trace.

I have learnt that beerfan is one of the funniest dudes on sways.  Your post was gold!

I've learned that I itch.

Mike

Howzit cosmo, Your itch is from sanding into fiberglass and not from shaping foam, but don't worry you will either get immune to the itch or learn not to sand into the glass. Aloha,Kokua

I found out that maybe shaping is'nt as mystical as it seems.  I never thought I could shape a board that would actually ride quite decent and that someone else would like a board that I shaped for them.

i learnt thet this here hand makes things seem bigger

and this here hand makes things seem smaller…

and if’n I switch hands to check

I’h do better at gettin’ stuff close.

I learn’t thet most boards do things a little bit diffrently

and if ya just adjust a lil’ bit they all go purty darn good.

If at first ya don’t succeed

meybe your idea of success

was a little skewed.

if you wanna shape surfboards do it.

Dont listen to no you cant guys.

hang with the sure ya can clan.

albeit due diligence alone does the

job due respect and

the product follows suit.

In other words try hard

and do yer best on every board

and they will become better and better.

after they are done love em and ride em

for what they are and ignore what they’re not.

…ambrose…

and of course I am a little messy

and thets a gift in itself.

I learned that it’s a dusty mess!
