I've learned i have no skill with power tools whatsoever, don't have a good "shapers eye", am impatient ( i rush towards the end so i can get the thing wet! ), and i really have no idea about board design.
On the other hand i've learned the beers i brew are waaay better than the boards i shape, and that balances it out.
I agree with Mike Daniel about planer zen. I love planing blanks.Skinning… Foiling…cutting rail bands. After that I am over it. I hate hand sanding and finishing them. To me a blank with all of the rail bands cut is like art. I like seeing the shadow from the side lights lines before they get sanded off.
I also learned that no matter how hard I tried I still cant keep from tracking foam dust in to my truck and it will always blow in to my eyes when I am running 80 miles per hour at night.
i’ve learnt that i need to slow down a bit sometimes, with making boards to life in general,
i’ve learnt i need to think more before i ‘do’ on far too many occassions, this also applys to general living,
i’ve learnt that the frustration of building some guys ‘magic’ boards yet never being able to make one ‘magic’ for myself makes me strive to be better,
i’ve also learnt that simpler is generally better(most of the time).
Compared to what there is to know, I know nothing.
The world is an imperfect place, and nothing worldly is perfect. Perfection can only be found in rare, fleeting moments in time… then they are gone without a trace.
Howzit cosmo, Your itch is from sanding into fiberglass and not from shaping foam, but don't worry you will either get immune to the itch or learn not to sand into the glass. Aloha,Kokua
I found out that maybe shaping is'nt as mystical as it seems. I never thought I could shape a board that would actually ride quite decent and that someone else would like a board that I shaped for them.
