I knew I’d see it before.
Pretty soft looking release edges on that one don’t you think…
Dozza designed himself a tail like that, which I shaped for him over 30 years ago…and it wasn’t original then…
Around and around we go…
If you look at my new board (avatar) I thought for a moment I stumbled on something only I had. But common sense proved that untrue. Wildly did that long before me, and I must have seen it here on swaylocks. So… Thanks Wildly!
Kinda Reminds me of Michael Petersons Fang tail. Wild looking thang!
Here is a pic from sailboat tuning that gives a good idea of why we want a straight and sharp exit off the tail.
lucky
Lucky we smasung surfboards to save the day, haha
that little round bit has some serious pull to it… I wonder at what speed it would break free.
The above bat tail would be throwing water everwhere.
Same goes for fin trailing edges…
Those images tell it all. Round rails cause water to wrap and slow a board, rounded tail release points likewise.
Tomo must have read the same book. Ha?
All the best
Im gunna have to add a hard sharp edge to the tail of one of my early boards after reading this thread. It was my first glass job with out help.
By the time I got the the end stage i just wanted to surf it.
The sharper edges on my new boards do seem to make a difference, now that I think of it.
In 1969 I started making my release edges, (on my personal boards) sharp enough to cut paper with. The increased speed really gave me a performance edge, especially at Sunset, Makaha, and Laniakea. Made a big difference between making and not making a critical wave. It was the secret sauce, 47 years ago. Pretty much main stream now.
