Here is my “can’t sleep until I draw this up” idea. Fish outline and rocker profile with a split diamond tail. Anyone ever see a tail shape like this?
I will continue posting photographs of progress. Feedback definitely appreciated and considered, but most of my feedback will come from lady Lake Michigan.
Also “punted” out these balsa twins today. I want to use this board to test different fins.
Hi, looks great
I have been thinking about a similar tail design for a while , got the blank the other day and drew some outlines and fin positions on to see what it would pan out like, I like to do this sometimes before I start shaping blank etc…
This will be a Quad fish board 511" 0r 10" by 19 3/4’, thought id call it the “SwineFish” model , sounds a little unfortutunate but topical … ha ha
keep posting your build pics, and some Lake wave pics when you test ride it!
Looks good man. I decided to leave this outline bump free. Mostly because the board I ride most, a Surf Rx New Toy has a double bump and I am kind of over it. I tried to go with the cleanest lines I could.
Any advice for fin setup/placement? When I was designing and planning, I was thinking of a quad setup, but Matt from resin X has been really stoked on a twinzer setup, at least for the lakes.
I’ll be sure to take some more photos of production as well as some action ones… that is… once we get out of this flat spell.
Hi, I have made a few Quads , have had pretty good results with the Mackee set up which can be downloaded off his website for all types of boards…
This setup seems to go pretty well , especially in larger surf and on bottom turns it really does come into its own as a setup… maybe for the smaller stuff like I imagine you surf in the Lakes more often a looser setup might be better?
I have been thinking of moving the back fins further forward and closer to the rail to make it more like a twinzer maybe with a small trailing fin, there is a Quad fin setup pdf available on Greenlights webpage which has the fins closer together like that.
Will post some progress pics as I get some more work done on the above board,
some pics of a quad setup using the Mackee formula on a board i did a while ago…
Im just learning and experimenting at the moment but hope that helps.
Have been altering the tail, it was pretty out there and didnt look right so heres what I came up with, just needs some sanding and cleaning up around tail area ( the fun bit) and then painting and glassing soon!
I like the planshape and I enjoy doing diff tail shapes myself but what about back foot placement ??? Just wondering if the swallow depth is too deep and if your foot would go across it ??? I shape a few quads myself and would be very interested in where you place your fins…I love differeent shapes and not being critical ,just curious to its functionality…
About half way through the video off this link is footage of Derek Hynd surfing what looks like an old board with the fins choped off and an asemetrical tail cut out…
Tail of your board made me think of it. Maybe try surfing this thing without fins?
I like it nocean. Reminds me of this shape I saw. .
I think that should work well as a quad. Keep it up.
My board is going slowly. I am actually doing a “test” board. I shaped a really flat, finless, diamondtail that I shaped out of a demolished 60’s popout. I am going to test a new glassing technique on it. If it turns out decent, I will be glassing the vampire above in the same fashion.
Hi pridemore, cheers for your feedback. I did think it would be a little bit of an issue but since the gap is quite narrow im hoping my foot will bridge it? I think the photo also makes the gap appear longer than it is so Ill post some more that show it better when I finish shape. Thanks for any comments and queries, ive let myself experiment a lot on this board just to have some fun so any input is great.Im kind of trying to do the tail this way to see if it will perfom a lot different due to any flex etc so will post results…
Thanks for the link marsh, finless sounds like an idea! I remember trying to surf a board behind a boat once where we took the fins off and it was amazing to feel just how difficult it really was to direct, will try to watch link… unfortunately im still on dial up internet which is pretty frustrating for stuff like that!!!
Jason, yip nice looking board, I decided to do my gap a little bigger as i foresee some glassing issues, wonder how they did the one above?
Good idea doing a glassing test for your board, keep up the great work!
