What is the general consensus on COIL Surfboards?

haven’t been in the water regularly in about 4 years. really just been borrowing boards on fun summer days. i think it’s time to get back into the swing of things and i probably want to go used.

came across this brand on craigslist. did some research, seemed to be a lot of positive reviews. however, this particular example still seems a bit steep as buyer is asking $450. it’s the Coil Blur to be specific.

seems there are some pressure dings as well…

thoughts on the board, the price and who this will work well for? i’m 5’11, 195lbs and an intermediate rider.

thanks all!

If you go to the Swaylocks surfshop folder there is an ongoing thread of coil enthusiasts posting ride reviews, commentary, etc. My iPhone won’t let me copy the URL or else I’d post a link.

You could also drop an e-mail to Mike Daniel himself.  From all accounts he’s as generous with his time as you’ll find in a shaper.  I don’t doubt he would help you determine the answers to your questions, even if you’re getting it second-hand.

Get in touch with Mike  I agree with you on the price seems abit high for used with those deck dents. like that. offer $300 settle at $350.  would be about right.

I like mine, 5’11’ hybrid sort of board, bought it used. paid a little more than I wanted, but a lot less than a new one (plus no 8-12 week wait). I gave Mike the serial number and he told me a couple of things, reassured me on the volume etc.  I don’t think he would steer you wrong, builds great boards.

1.1cft is 31 L, because of coil’s light build it may float you about like a 33-34 L polyester board.

I am less weight than you and my 1.25cft coil is perfect float for me. maybe i’m older too, though. probably.

$450 might be a touch high because of the pressures, but it is a better board than a used polyester, I wouldn’t expect the guy to sell it for $250-300. Make an offer, see how it goes.

BTW it looks like it might have been kitesurfed, that’s the signature pressure pattern for a regular footed kitesurfer.  It takes one to know one. I am probably killing mine slowly by kiting on it more than surfing, but loving it.

If it dies I’ll probably go back for more. Good luck, good waves either way.

Never heard of 'em.
