If I’m thinking correctly, you need a breath mask of some sort to sand fiberglass, but what kind? is your average dust mask good enough or do you need a ventilator type?
Oh yeah, where’s the best place to buy RR epoxies? the Tap plastics stuff I got turned nasty yellow when it dried.
you should were a respirator any way you don’t want very fine epoxy glass dust in your lungs, and should were a tyvek suit so you don’t get glass dust in your pores
Mate, get your self as much protection as you can from the highly toxic dust and vapours that every stage of surfboard production create, you owe it to your health. I use a tyvek suit, they are,nt that expensive, about £10-£15 here and they last well. I use the finest filter mask I can get hold of for shaping and sanding and a 3M,s organic vapours mask for glassing. If I did a lot of boards ,more than 20 a year, I’d get an air fed mask, they’re the business.
I wear nothing. In fact I fix my boards while naked. Puts hair on your chest! OK, OK… obviosuly I’m kidding. I was just wondering that myself. I have been using the basic duster/sanding mask and it seems to keep the fiberglass dust out and cut down on the resin fumes, however I’m sure it’s doing some damage. but hey, living in this part of the country or in LA, breathing the normal air is probably doing us all damage. Peace.

I use a full face respirator with carbon filters… Works great …
full face masks are safer but more expensive (over $100)
battery operated ventilated full face masks like the one Wayne Lynch uses in Litmus are the best.
what ever you use paper or a rubber one with organic filters, a complete tight seal is mandatory no matter what.
people who don’t and breathe in the dust and fumes will die a very unpleasant death many decades earlier than they would expect whether they want to accept it or not. Surfers have been pretty stupid related to the health hazards of their hobby and most are dead, dying or will be dying of some pretty nasty things in the coming years. You might as well dig a hole out back and crawl into it like a dog and die at the offset of these symptoms to save your friends and loved ones the pain of your selfishness in your early years.
It’s easy to talk big until you’re destitute lying in some public hospital bed paid by others, hacking up some pretty ugly crap with plastic tubes sticking out of your body everywhere.
Yup enjoy that lifestyle later in your years…
So think about it now and do the right thing and save those who love you the pain of putting you out of your misery later.
Yeah, that stuff is pretty nasty, I just didn’t know how small a particle had to be removed to be safe. I was just testing out ways to sand the thing, surform, 60 grit etc, I stopped right away as it made my throught feel funny, that was after like, 3 swipes.
