What length for traditional fish?

I am wanting to have a traditional fish shaped for me and was wondering what length would be optimal? I am 5’7" 165 lbs and surf mid-length boards, single fin eggs, etc. Want do delve into the world of traditional fish and looking forward to it. Any help in dimensions would be helpful. My surfing skill I would say is “better than average” but not advanced. Thanks, Ed

ed, i was told a rule of thumb, is to have the board about forhead level

5’11"

Hi Ed, I just ordered a 5’8 twin keel and I am 5’11 152 lbs.

i have a 5’6" and are 5’8" 145

I’m 6’3" and ride a 5’8" Steve lis wouldn’t make one over 5’8" in his day

HI Ed, I 5’9" 175lbs. I ride a 6’6". Not as quick as I used to be.

Thanks for your posts. Much appreciated. What would be the advantage(or disadvantage) of going longer, say 6’4" to 6’8". Would these longer fish lengths benefit a surfer who is not used to shorter boards? Ed

6’2" 180 and i have a 6’2" and a 5’10" dubstar – who is shaping it?

Thank you, Paul…

steve lis wouldn’t make one over 5ft 8 in his day???He is still in his day and just made a couple fishes over 6ft 2 inch for a friend.I don’t understand why the 5ft 6 fish is in style??

Hi Tim! I’ve been meaning to email you about this AND the Liddle hull AND the Dale surf mat…I’d like to take you up on the offer to try them out. Maybe when I get back from Puerto Rico, I leave 3/19 and get back 3/28. I decided to get a board from Manuel Caro. he was very responsive to an email I sent him, plus I like the Gephart double-foil keels and the connection to Rich Pavel. I figured I would go with him because I’ve heard good things and he seems to have a cool underground thing going on. Plus, I figured any attempt to get a board from Lis, or Pavel, or Brom would take “much” longer…maybe in the future! Not to mention Skip Fryre, I have to try yours someday, as I’ll never be able to get one of those! dubstar “at” optonline.net

thanks for the kind words john >>> i just shaped a 5’8" single fin inspired by ted spencer’s part in “innermost limits of pure fun.” it’s 15.75 x 21 x 16 with a 11.5 diamond tail. imagine a fish with the swallowtail filled in to a 1" diamond, with a stage 6 greenough paddle fin. should be refreshing for the fish-oriented surfer looking to pivot and snap. photos coming soon >>> http://www.mandalacustomshapes.com

…to the VCR!

Paul Jensen, the fish info you posted is fantastic! Do you have anything regarding the fin placement i.e how far up, toe in etc. ?

Look closer, it’s there… http://www.hollowsurfboards.com

Paul- one question concerning the depth of the swallowtail on your fish. How did you come up with this number? To my eye it looks as if the depth is good where the cork laminations start. After all those lams, it shortens up the tail to a very narrow depth. Any thoughts on your design? This is hardly a criticism, just curious.

…I think you figured it out… The next time (yeah right) I’ll compensate for the cork / ply build outs… http://www.hollowsurfboards.com

You’re the man! I’ll look forward to meeting you in California if you make it.
