what resin to buy

i just shaped a board and i need to buy some resin. i moved to chile and the problem is that the local supplier has no idea about what resin to use for the surfboard. what i need is the resin code so i can place an order. hope some one can help.

…go with the nautical one (“clear” and with UV stabilizer)

a bit thinner but pretty good

or, try “Silmar S-249A” and have him order it for you.

thanks for the information. back home i could just buy the resin from the surfboard suppliers and i´ve never had to worry about what the resin was. what type of resin is Silmar S-249A is it an epxoy resin or poly.

polyester resin for surfboards. Where does your shop receive product from? U.S.? Oz?

I can get the relavent codes for each region. South African polyester is quite good and

fairly low-priced. Depending upon what country you are in, you could get the styrene

content higher, like above 36 percent…

Hi

I live in Antofagsta chile and i have no idea where the supplier get the resin from. The suppliers name is Plastiref and i´ve been told that the can get any resin i need. the guy behind the counter wants to sell me a mixture of P4 90% and E210 10%. does this sound right to you. hope you can help.

P4 is the standard raw resin base and E210 is the flex agent. I don’t know if this is a good idea.

You want polyester resin, ortho NOT iso, and you want maximum clarity. A custom mix is

not likely to get you the clearness surfboard builders demand (no other industry requires this

clarity except for some casting resins) and the UV resistance. Can you outsource to Peru

or Brazil? Resin is readily available there and Argentina as well.

Have your seller look up Silmar S-249A, and the toll mixers (source) will know what it is.

Surfboard resin like in neighboring countries. Are there surfboard makers in Chile who you

could ask about resin sources?

yeah. thanks for the information. i put alot of hard work into shaping my board (which is a 5´10" fish) and i would just hate to stuff it up with the wrong resin. this is the sort of thing you don´t think about because you just buy it back home and i’t´s ready to go. i´m now living in a town (Antofagasta Chile)where not many people surf. oh yeah anyone who wishes to travel and surf one of the best waves with only your mates. try chile. chile gets hit by big swells and on many locations you can surf it alone. if anyone wants info just ask.
