Curious what scissors others are using for cutting cloth. Of all the tools I use this is the one that I’m not happy with. I’ve tried a few and the best ones I’ve used are adequite at best. I’d really like to cut a super clean line when cuttting cloth. I was watching one of the Jack Reeves glassing videos and noticed that he uses an unusual pair of scissors that cuts cloth like butter. I recently bought a really cool pair of scissors with the sharpest blades I’ve ever seen and surprisingly they are terrible on cloth as if the angle of attack is wrong despite that these things would take a finger off. Thoughts???
a pair of wiss 22 shears. Actually I have two, because I’d be lost without them.
I use these. Like Keith I have two pairs because I would be lost without them. They have a slight serrated edge and will cut carbon too. Look in the archives not too long ago for a thread on scissors
Jack reeves = most likely Wiss 5600 garden sheers. I’ve never used an OG pair but I’ve used newer equivalents and they worked well. Just make sure you keep em sharp.
Wiss( Brazilian these days, not German or U.S. made). A pair of $2.00 Harbor Freight plastic scissors and an Electric scissor I bought online. I also have a pair of serrated scissors I use for Carbon and Kevlar.
I bought these because of a former thread here and am very impressed with them.
I love how they do not push the cloth ahead of the blades but hold it firm and snip it cleanly. Even cutting woven roving with just the last 1/4 inch of the tip of the scissors.
The last pair I bought are Wiss Model W10TM. They are razor sharp…scary sharp actually… yet they push the fabric ahead of the blade so no bueno. It has to be the angle of attack. I had high hopes for these but they are a fail.
I will buy a set of those gingher serated shears next. I like the look of those.
Edit: Just ordered a set of those shears.
Top one is Heritage 10-1/2" Industrial Shears, 210LRK, $30ish USD, made in USA, from a fiberglass supply house a couple years ago. Prices have gone up. Often used to trim cloth coated in epoxy.
Bottom is from from a surplus store, $9 USD, from a surplus store, made in Pakistan.
Both cut fiberglass cloth and carbon fiber nicely, both struggle with Vectornet. I don’t have a serrated one yet for comparison.
The serrated edges are what keepbthe shears from pushing the cloth ahead. You have to have this when cutting direct sized cloth.
I have had great success with these.http://shop.fiberglasssupply.com/Shears_and_Knives-12in._Shear.html
I have only used them on 4 and 6 oz cloth. No carbon or any other fancy gimicky stuff.
I use fiskars universal. Made in Suede. Not cheap but easy to find in hobby stores in Europe. Cut very well and durable. Fiskars make cloth specific ones for a lot more money, Cut all kind of fiber for long time.
I use these everyday. cuts perfect for cloth or carbon
Thank you everyone for the recommendations. My new set of Gingher 8" Micro-Serated Shears showed up yesterday. They are so much better than any of the ones I’ve been using for years. Can even cut tight curves with them. Incredibly perfect cut. Now to get busy on some more boards.
I saw those gingher sheers at the Walmart yesterday. 29 bucks.
You bought the best.
I got them on eBay for $24 with free shipping. I’m giving them a good workout today cutting cloth for a fin panel .
