What size egg?

I’ve decided my first attempt at building a board will be an egg. I’ve been reading the archives and have a lot of questions answered already, but maybe the biggest, “what size egg should I make”. I am 6’2", 195lbs. Surfing mainly in Ventura, CA and Newport Beach, CA (i.e. wetsuit, more weight). I surfed in the 80’s (shortboards) moved away from the coast and quit. Started back this winter riding a 9’0" basic modern longboard. Still have a lot to learn, but picking it back up pretty quick. Can noseride, do floaters, off the lip (with just the right break), and have had stand up barrells in some DOH (I was probably in over my head  and should not have been out but I drove 1hr+ to get there and it was breaking so I went out, survived and had a lot of fun). I am 36 and very athletic (compete water skiing and ski on the US Veteran team).

advise on egg size would be appreciated.

thanks

I don’t know about making an egg. You can buy them right off the shelf and they are cheap.

Because you are a bigger guy, I’m right there with you, I would go with Jumbo eggs. 4 will work perfect for omlets. They should help with your surfing quite a bit.

I think you might want to look at something around 7’ to 7’4, perhaps in a double ender style.

As for bottom contors, a nice rolled v with increasing v in the tail would be a pretty fast board that would also be nice rail to rail. If you’re athletic and dont’ need the lift, I would work with the v bottom.

I just started on a 7’ egg with a 2+1 set up that I just got and it’s super versitle. You can really do just about anything with it.

it’s got pinched 60/40 rails that hold nice and release well as well. It’s really a great all around board that rides just as well in waist high peelers as it does in head high slop.

If you want to make an egg there is all the dimensions in a book called Surfboard Design and Construction.

It’s for a 6’ 10" but you can scale up (or down)

Mr Jenson kindly made about 30 copies of it and mailed them to folks all over. If you ask the swaylockians nicely someone may scan the relevant pages and post them for you.

I would but I have no scanner.

I have attached the Lis Fish from the same book, so you can check the way the give you the measurements. I can always photocopy and mail it to you as a last resort.

hope thats some help

Yes, Paul Jenson was nice enough to send me a copy of the book. It gives detailed plans for a 6’8" designed by Tony Staples. My question is more what size egg should I be riding. I have no experience with eggs (other than breakfast, and yes Droptrow, jumbo eggs are best for omlets) so I don’t know what size to go with. From looking at Jenson’s sight he built a 7’4" egg and while he is a much more experienced surfer and surfs different breaks (Washington vs SoCal), he appears to be about my size. This is also inline with the size Christian suggested, 7-7’4" (thanks great info).

Since Ian mentioned the SDaC book and egg design, my next question was going to be about egg rocker. All the boards in the book have a 70’s rocker, completely flat through the tail. What are good rocker numbers for an egg? Also the archives imply an egg would generally have the wide point forward of center where the book has the widepoint at midpoint. How far forward of center is recommended for an egg?

thanks
