I was thinking of subscribing to some mags. I was leaning towards “the surfer’s Journal” as it has diverse subjects that are interesting and informative but I’m also drawn to the typical “slash-n-air” pics that “surfing” has alot of. So I was wondering what surf magazines you guys subscribe to? There might be a mag out there that I’ve never heard of. Thanks.
The Surfer’s Journal and The Surfer’s Path…the two best general surf magazines available. There is a little overlapping content but not enough to make a difference as Surfer’s Path ascends into the contempo soul area Surfer held for its early decades. Surfer’s Journal is the National Geographic of the surf world. If you are going to take several mags I would say those are the two “must haves”. Consider the other offerings to meet your current interests…shorty boards or longboards, geographic interests…take one for a year and if you tire of it try another next time.
You don’t need any help, The Sufers Journal is where it’s at. Quality, quality, quality, intelligent, unique. Not hype/adds. The others are filler while you’re waiting for the next TSJ.
I subscribe to both Surfers Journal and Surfers Path.
Of the other cheaper mags I have actually been enjoying Transworld surf it seems to have quite a bit of diversity. it actually seems like the most mature and immature at the same time.
none at the moment i used to subscribe to bodyboarding magazines but both went under very sad:(. and i used to subscribe to surfer, a good mediation between surfing and surferjournal with a tendcy towards the surfing but if i was to get a surfing mag it would be surfer’s journal most definetly i love all their magazines
i was in a contest with a friend who could go the longest with out opening a surf mag… we both made it a few years and then i peaked at a mag in a supermarket checkout line, my girlfriend caught me and blew my cover… been about 5 years and i haven’t really looked through one yet… really made me soooooooooo much more stoked on surfing (i also cut out surfing vids)… this site is my only contact with the surfing world…
i can’t see shelling out the big bucks for retrospectives, nor ‘surf-connected-art’ and the like. and pictures of other people riding waves do little for me. was there for ‘then’, and now is now. the ‘art’ segments are kinda strained, ‘surfer-writers’ tend to have Spicoli-like literate skills and hey, the best pictures of surfing is what comes in through my myopic orbs.
and i don’t see ads on my wave.
useful information? well, here we are.
doc…
besides which, the Murphy cartoons have long since gone.
I don’t SUBSCRIBE to any , but I buy the ocassional issue of [Australian ] Surfing World, and the Surfer’s Path .
We don’t get the Surfer’s Journal here in west australia . Marge .jpg"]
“Australian Longboarding” is a good mag here, too …it has interesting design features …on shortboards - not surprising , since the former editor and photographer of Surfing World [Bruce Channon] now edits it . [And does a few of the photos too]
I occassionally buy surfing , as it’s half the price of Surfer here , and has less ads.
Surfers Path - great mag, interesting “read” not just a load of ads or pictures of impossible airs that some grom will never land, and 2 months is just about enough time to get trough it before the nex ones out. plus its printed on 100% recycled paper using soia ink so that can’t be bad either.
I’m with Doc on this one. I will glance at a mag or two in Barnes and Nobel or somewhere, but other than that, I no longer look at them at all. Not that I don’t have my share around the house from years ago. I will hold with my opinion that magazines have done far more damage to our sport than good. Just like surf clothing companies. It was bound to happen that way though. We have such a great experience in surfing, someone had to try and make a buck off of it. To do that, you have to create something other than the core of what is there.
Surfer’s Journal. I keep them stacked next to the “Growler Pit.” Photo covers are always beautiful and interesting. An occasional article I find interesting. Last one has a good article on Titus Kinimaka. I can’t read the others. I havn’t been 15 for a long time. I’ll thumb through the photos in the grocery store, though. Mike
I don’t subscribe to any magazine but will always pick up the latest Surfer’s Journal and Longboard magazine. Some issues are better than otheres but the good ones are real good and I’m trying to keep a full set of both. Surfer’s Path like everyone says is a great mag too, but I only just pick up the ones that have articles I really like. The rest, Surfer, Surfing, TransWorld, etc. are I pick up very sporadically, only if they have something of interest in them.
