What's a 1959 JACK HALEY worth?

Hey,

New to this. I picked up a Jack Haley board in trade about 8 years ago. One day surfing at Seal a guy saw it and suggested I go by Jack Haley’s house and show him. I actually caught him and family walking down the street (He died about a year later.) He looked at it, said he probably shaped it in 1959 and suggested I keep it and ride it, which I do. It’s got some delam and bubbles and looks fair at best, deck label is barely readable but there. Measures 10’ 4" and is a bear but I can ride it. Glassed in original fin still solid.

I know he’s a legend. I’d like to keep it, but I can’t do it justice.

Its going to be hard to get an answer to your question. You are looking for an appraisal and the collectors won’t help (its the greed factor). If I had a board like that and felt the need to sell it I would put it on EBAY.All of the collectors watch it dailly waiting for something cool to show up.It sounds like a good board and may go any where from 500 to 2000 or more…you never can tell.THe art of selling on Ebay is another conversation in itself.

I have a # for you.He’s a collector and a buyer.He lives in Seal Beach.E-mail me @ spitzersupercharge@sbcglobal.net.

You’ve definately hit the nail the head with the Ebay comment. what’s with all those lamps anyway?

As a collector and a refinisher, Jack Haley is a good name but not too big name outside of Seal Beach. If it were a Weber, Noll, Jacob, Bing etc it would be worth in that condition 550-1000 tops. But…Jack Haley, Del Canon, Bill Wetzel etc in that condition are probably worth 350.00-750.00. Most important is the Logo, fin and foam being fresh and clear. Any holes drilled in the fin, brown out foam, etc, kills the value.

It’s all really subjective, some one that had a Jack Haley when they were a kid and trying to relive old times might pay top dollar, but the worst thing that has come along is the Antique Road Show, it makes anybody with something old think that it’s worth top dollar. (not bragging, just for example) I’ve got a mint wedge stringer no color 1967 Hansen 50/50, I mean no dings, white foam, no scratches, never been touched, no Brown anywhere, pure white, it’s probably worth $1,500 tops, thats a lot of cash, but it’s impossible rare. I’m scared to surf it, worried of someone running into it. Go figue. So, long story short, they’re worth what they’re worth, it all about the next guy willing to pay, but don’t get your hopes up, unless it really is a mint board.

I have been playing on Ebay for around a year, both buying and selling.I call it the "Great Equalizer"and it a huge market. For an example you can go buy those price books on Antiques and collectables that say so and so is worth so much etc.Well you might as well burn them…because they are essentially usless anymore.THis really pisses the Antique dealers off because it ruins the market for them. Here is my point on the Jack Haley board…its a rare off the wall item.Big name boards like Noll,Weber,Hobie etc. are now common items on Ebay.In other words when the boards reached the point where they were bringing mega bucks everyone and his brother pulled them out of the shed and started selling…thus driving the price down.Things that are rare such as the Jack Haley Board have great possibilities online because this is what collectors want.A “collector, expert” appraised a little Balsa Paipo board for 200bucks…I told my friend to put in on ebay and it brought $860.00.Go figure eh?

Hey Jay,

This is the board I’ve been working on (if it posts). 1967 Mickey Munoz and have gotten some feedback that it’s worth 750.00. I also saw a very similar one (although without color and a single stringer) go on ebay for close to 800.00. Mainly wanted to send the pic but may help refrus for an approx price guide.

Yo Resinhead (Jay) I also totally agree with everything that you said…especially the Antiques Road Show deal… Hey that 50/50 aint worth nothin’…so I will help you out and give you $100 for it.Its just cluttering up your quiver anyway. Can you finance me on a weekly payment?

I find it hard to part with any of my 60’s boards, even the ones from the 70’s. If I sold alll my 60’s boards at auction or ebay or to have-to-have it rich guys, I could probably get $30,000 or more…I’d want the boards back within a week. I’d rather give them away when the time comes. Of course, if I were facing financial ruin, things might be different…

aahhh, the apraisal of old surfboards, What a hornet’s nest! Just as Mr. Clean said rarity increases value somewhat, but cleaniness is next to godliness I say. It all revolves around what some one is willing to pay? Nice board, Don’t see many old Munoz around, err specially on E-bay. Pretty clean, not too faded, original fin & Bolt? I think the apraisal seems right, $700-$900 or so. Better to keep it as a rider, 67-68 longboards in my opinion were the best, flex fins, step decks, pinched rails, rolled bottoms etc.

AMEN.

If you have seen any old Bill Weztel shapes please contact me!

thanks, Bane Wetzel

Are you Bill’s son.
Bill Bahne and I had heard of Bill’s passing during his stay at Pavone’s after a surf, if this is in fact what happened. Bill Bahne’s oldest son came in at the very end of the story and replied how tragic, we retuned with, “you spent your life around the ocean and just surfed one of the best left points in the world, laid down in a hammock in the shade of the plams and didn’t wake up, it doesn’t get any better than that”

Bill Wetzel, Haven't heard the name in a long time! Would like to hear of his life and passing. Was a freind for a short time long ,long ago. Lost track of him when I was in the military.  Seems like a past life!!

Howzit Wood_Ogre, Bill was a great guy and we were in the same pre heat in the first Katin contest and I beat him and advanced and he was a gracious loser and shook my hand and congratuated me. He was also a good friend of one of my room mates who rode for Jack Haley and oher board makers, the guy still has a Haley price brosure (spell) with his picture on the front hanging 10. Sorry to hear he has paessed away.Aloha,Kokua

Would love to see the brochure! Do you have it??
