Whats the best shaping video ?

Shaping being the focus .

Post it up

A true Legend and Master Craftsman at work. The joy he gets from this always makes me smile.

Angus-

Funny, I was just going to post that same video. Love it.

+1 to that vid. Another good vid is Tim Stamps “Quad Fish”, and Ben Aipa’s - both of these vids show some pretty good stuff!

Suggestion: spend two hrs goin through vids and you’ll find several decent vids that show the routines, also slight variations in style. I also saw - Akila Aipa son doin concaves w his child…it gave me ideas on how
To carve out single concave, also good, sanding skills.

Fyi- The Stamp’s fish tail cut out method is off the hook! It works.that said, I did the cuts w 5" Japanese pull saw, but I cut exactly - like Tim, and used the 9" foam eZ round rasp -which was total clock work… the only dif was: I surformed + sponge sanded my fish tail (deck side), also screened it.

I hadn’t seen that Terry Martin video before, a good one!

Here’s the Ben Aipa video

El Agave Especial from Windigo Surfboards on Vimeo.

featuring our very own Mr.Snyder!

Ive always wanted too see a barry shaping video.

Great stuff keep’em coming

A little dated but still the best.

So what about the Jim Phillips videos? Seems if you want to learn something the best way is to study one of the masters. Jim seems to bea PITA perfecionist. Thats not a criticism
more of a compliment to his attention to detail.

The 101 video for the first few boards then the Phillips videos.  Mike

It’s very cool that we have all of these craftsman on film. You get to see the different styles of shaping and create your own.

What a great attitude Bob Olson has.  I liked the Stamps video too. Incredible how he uses the big orbital sander in the crack. I’ll never be a real shaper… Mike

I’d say the JIM PHILLIPS video, is probably the best one available.

I agree Bill. Jim is so detailed in his explanations. No guessing what he is doing. But there are some nuggets in all of the ones mentioned, particularly if you know what to look for.

Aside from the Jim Phillips mastercraftsman DVD

Greg Loehr has one on shaping EPS incluing cutting and making your own blank.

both from the same Video Production Company.

The Paul Carter Videos demonstrate very good technique.

The Jim Phillips series is my favourite, he not only shows you how he shapes but he also explains why he does things certain ways. He demostrates how to shape a classic log, short boards and even builing a wooden board from scratch.

He shows you some cool home made tools, the importance of taking it slow and how to set up your blank before you start ripping into it (this is gold IMO).

He does an interview where he explains some history of shapes and shaping passing on some great information.

Then there’s Roger Brucker’s (cleanlines) glassing vid in the series, great stuff, a true master and full of ideas and techniques even an experienced glasser would learn a lot from.

Wel worth the entrance fee and you will watch them more than once I guarantee

Why not??  Probably because you have to buy it to see it.  Not much taste for that around here.  $$$$$$$$$
