Hi AnDi,
Any planer will do if you’re just starting out. Harbor Freight sells a cheap one. Others will tell you the Skil 100, clark motified hitachi, that big hitachi, modified bosches/makitas/etc.
There’s a start…
Hi bizgravy ,

you could also do a search. there’s all sorts of info on this site.
like biz said, harbor freight will get you started.
I can not live without my Rockwell 653’s Heavy, loud and powerful. When set up right the finest adjustments possible. Not a “girlie planer”, you will develop Popeye arms.
I’ve used many of the planers out there. I really prefer the Skil 100 to all others. It is ‘‘the devil I know’’ the best. I also use the Bosch planer. It is quite forgiving, and has positive depth adjustment. Start with the HF cheapy, but aim for a Skil 100 if you intend to shape into the future.
the skil 100 7.5v is the best- if you have got about a grand to spend on one. never used the hitachi, but i use a bosch that i modified based on a thread from about a year ago- i forget the link but you can find it in the archives. works pretty good, its cheap (about $200) and with a few mods is nice, its no skil (much lighter, shorter base, ratchet depth) but it works, in some ways its better for a beginner because the depth gauge doesnt swing like a skill so you wont f#$% up the foil or rocker or something (im not nearly as confident in my shaping as i am in my laminating so i still shy away from using the skil).
Found some skil 100 on ebay >>>
