Do any of you guys have wheeled board bags ? after my last trip, lugging 4 boards in my bag for a mile, i decided i need a wheeled bag. (plus, it seems like it would be much easier to get around in airports) i can’t decide which brand or style is bettter though ! -looks like oam, dakine, and balin all make them. any advice is appreciated. (any brands to avoid ? or ?) thanks guys, brian
if you have a 4 board bag already take it to a alterations place and get 2 straps put on the bottom one regular nylon strap and one flexible nylon strap…Insert skateboard and Viola… Pro-Lite did this for me on one of thier world traveler bags. http://paradoxdistribution.com
i strapped a skateboard to mine too.
hmm, but won’t the skateboard ding your boards when the baggage monkeys pile who know’s how many tons of crap on your precious boards ? (or where do you put the skate when you check the bag on the plane ?) aside from no wheels, another problem for me is that my old dakine bag is having zipper failures. i would hate to get to indo and have full zipper blow out. so far, the puller tab things keep breaking off on the zippers. i had to put zip ties on as pullers to close the thing up last time. has anyone else had this trouble with thier dakine bags ?
These are pretty cool. SteveA http://www.santamonicasurfcase.com/
I to have had trouble with my zip pulls breaking on my 9’ DaKine travel bag I removed the pull tags and fitted key ring loops through the carridge and have had no trouble since, I also wipe the zip with a rag with some WD40 on it before i store it. http://www.seabeast.co.uk
from experience id say dont take that amount of boards that you need wheels, my god ive been through that, not any more. now i only take what i can carry
Travel light! Youre seriously messed up if you
ve hauling around so much shit that you have to use little wheels to move it. Don`t behave like some candyassed Amerikan dork.
travelling light sounds great until you snap your 7’2 and buckle the 6’6 , leaving you with that 5’10 fish you brought to goof around with in between swells , you’ve still got 8 or 9 days left on your pricey indo boat trip, and the swell goes double overhead plus and nasty. you’re now the photographer. think worst case scenario. travel light on the clothes/incidentals , heavy on the boards/leashes/essentials. jim dunlop
If you really want to go bulletproof, get a Santa Moanica Surfcase Hard Case. These are admittedly a bear to travel with, especially the longboard cases, but the larger ones have wheels on them, so it’s not as bad to lug as the soft cases with no wheels. We took 3 boards to Costa Rica and back in one (2 9’2"s and a 7’6") and all came through without a scratch. The tie downs molded into the case make it easier to put the case on a roof rack. The cases are made one by one, so you can also getthem to customize them somewhat. By the way, SMSC’s are what Greg Noll uses to transport the $15,000 wall hangers that he makes, and that is probably a good testimonial to how well the SMSC works.
unstrap the skate to take with you on the plane so you can skate around to kill time waiting in between flights. my dakine zippers are holding up well.
I got the Destination Surf 4 board wheelie bag for my trip to Hawaii last spring. I had shipped boards ahead, so when I left I had my 4 board 9’6" wheelie case, with my 4 board, short bag on top and my 2 bags of luggage,. I was still able to haul it aroung Honoulu and Orange Co. airports without too much of a strain
cool, thanks guys. i appreciate the input. brian
Hey Jim times have changed I guess.I can remember when you and me were lucky to have one board shaped from second blanks and scrounged up glass scraps. R. B.
Bro get your boards glassed in 6oz, 1/4’ thick stringer. There’s plenty solo cruisers out there on long term missions with only one board.
