When Taping the Rails...??????????

When you are taping the rails when you are doing your LAM job, do you have to use thick butcher’s paper or can you just use a bunch of tape? If you need butcher’s paper, where do you get it?

Wax paper, foil, news print, etc.

Masking paper that painters use works well. You can get it at any good paint store or the Home Depot.

well, if your friendly neighborhood butcher won’t give you any, just go with wax paper…it’ll get the job done.

what about regular plastic sheeting?

you can use all sorts of different things. all it needs to do is keep the resin off the board, so test it out first… take some catalyzed resin, and pour it on to whatever you’re testing out, and put this on top of some paper towels or something…if it soaks through before it kicks, then it’s no good. and if it melts through, then that’s just bad. try stuff out…experiment…it’s the swaylock’s spirit.

Watch the news print. I picked up a shaped blank after reading the local news and guess what? Yep, inky finger smudges. My guess is that you don’t want those on your lam either.

Loews (sp?) has roofing paper for about $12.00 a roll. It’s fairly thick and you can use it to make templates off of your friends’ boards as well. Half a roll has lasted me two years. Fine for the garage shaper.

Plastic sheet might be kinda sticky to work with around resin IMO.

I just use a double layer of tape. After the first one is in place (usually 1/2"), I stick another 2" piece to it and make sure it hangs down when I lam. Doug

I am sure you have a wal-mart near your house. go into the postal section with big envelopes etc. and they have craft paper or box wrapping paper for 2.50 cents for a 60 ft roll. that will work for plenty of boards.
