Where am I going wrong with my planer technique?

I’m working on my first foam board I have done an alai and a hand plane so no rocker in the normal sense. THe blank is a just foam 9’9. I made 5 passes on the first side. Meaning my planer was set on the lowest notch i think 1/24" so i should have removed 5/24"on the entire side however i got the beginning of a pretty crazy transition era V- bottom. Though cool in its own mind, not what I was necessarily going for. Blank is plenty thick(one of the reason i went for it was to allow for plenty of foul up room) so I stil got plenty of room to recoverin. I thought i had the planer angled enough towards the stinger( even though i can admit to having a couple gouges) but i wouldn’t be subrised if it wasn’t enough. I thought maybe the stringer was holding me up giving me the bevel. Anythoughts on where I went wrong and how to fix it? thanks Chris

Im no genious, but its possible the blank started with a V allready in it and your planer is just following it

I start my planing from center out to rails

I have a bosch and it came from the factory with a twist in it and it would cut more on one side than the other

untill I modified it level

try making a pass over the stringer then block sand it to flat

thats all I got for ya

If the stringer area is higher, make passes along its length until the crown feels correct, I do this all the time. You can keep lots of crown in the forward to nose area and make the area under your back foot much flatter this way.

Do NOT start by TRYING to cut up the middle, the planer is force to try and cut in an absolute straight line and will porpoise out of the deck at the start of the nose rocker.

Start your cuts at the rail edges and progress towards the center while becoming more parallel to the center line, in this manner, the planer can be run at a slight angle and fit into the rocker curve from the outside in.

Like Mikey says, “try it, you’ll like it”

Hi Jimmy!

I thought he was wanting to flaten the bottom of the blank

would your proceedure also apply to the bottom?

not to back pedle but I agree with your planer tecniques and also use them for the deck

but for the bottoms I just go straight up the blank , tail to nose

seems to work for me, (nothin a hammer cant fix) LOL!

Jim and Ken ,

Thanks for the replies. In attempt to clarify confusion trying to flatten the bottom perpendiculiar to the stringer. Not flatten out the rocker. Figure save that dort of tinkering till i get a couple boards under the belt.

Thanks again Chris
