Where can i buy the “pin” or object used on fin box FINS…( sliding pin; i don’t know the exact name so i’m calling it “pin”)…
How do the professionals do it…? Is the product used for anything else in another industry…??
These last weeks i’ve been making fins… with the help of a local shaper in his shop we made the fiberglass panel… ( 8 oz Volan, purple resin tint) i’ve been cutting a couple of fin shapes and started foiling…
The problem…
We decided to make a couple of longboard fins for boxes for myself… now to be able to get them all finished i need help finding the “PIN” that allows the fin to slide and hold into the box… i thought somebody at swaylocks would know where to find it…
(I already found a supplier of the screws and plates) Im from Puerto Rico, and theres no specialized local supplier… i need to order them…
i’ll try and post some pictures up soon… they’re coming out very nice…
I don't know what others do,but I take 3/16" diameter stainless steel dowels and cut them with a hacksaw blade to 5/8" long. the entire dowel I find is about 3 ft long so it lasts awhile. I get this from my local hard ware store, but greenlight surf supply I believe sells individual pins cut to length. good luck
If you can’t find roll pins, stainless steel nails are a good substitute.
Easy to find at most lumber yards. They come in different gauges so pick the right type. Most likely, #8 or higher. Plus, they don’t rust and have ringed shanks so they’ll seat and stay put if the hole is a good match. I use them on fins that have lost the pin.
I was wondering about where to buy a pin for the fin that I recently built. After reading Ray’s post I Googled “Roll Pin Home Depot.” Here’s one of the links that came up at the top of the list.
It’s basically the same question but directed at tractor enthusiasts. I clicked around the forum and started cracking-up. These guys are just like us. All they can think about is riding and fixing up their tractors, and they all help each other out online.
Howzit ricky, Just call Bahne Fins in Cardiff, they sell the real thing for about 20 cents apiece but might be a little more these days. I bought 50 of them and I think I put them in a box that I sent here. We are going to have a garage sale next week so I am finally going to go through all the boxes I sent and if I find them I will post it so any body who needs any can have some. I will try and keep a few and give some to chip since I nly probably only have about 20 left since I traed some to Hanalei Surf Co and used about 10 on fins I made myself for friends. I will be fair in doling them out so more than 1 person can't have them all. Aloha,Kokua
McMaster is a great place to find most hardware you could ever want. And they have warehouses pretty much everywhere, so ground shipping is usually less than 2 days. http://www.mcmaster.com/#roll-pins/=awg7b2

Hi ricky, I have 5000 in stock, PM me I will take care of you my friend. Mahalo,Larry
I’m no expert here but I have done some fin lay-ups. If I can add one little thing. Be really patient when you drill the hole that your pin is gonna go into. Seems so easy but the last two LBs I made have glassed on single fins. That’s good and all but both of those fins became glass ons because I f’d up the pins. The first fin I ever did it came out perfect so I just got to thinking it was easy. All it takes is to be a mm off and it won’t slide easy in the box. Hope that is helpful.
Kokua is right just call Bahne, and they will sell you a couple, right out of the same stock that they use. I guess you can be creative and get a piece of wire and carefully cut it but, why? The pins Bahne use adjust a bit when you hammer them in. And there not afraid your going to put them out of business. Making fins is itchy and dirty. If your serious get a “1/2 inch gulleted rem-grit band saw blade” custom made for your band saw. And don’t cry about the price it will pay for itself. Also make dedicated jigs to guide drills for the reasons yaar suggested.
