Where do you guys cut your freelaps?

When glassing a board how much wrap should i be looking for for each layer on a 2 x 4oz layer on deck and 1 4oz layer on bottom

So far I have cut a 1.5’’ lap past the rail (to wrap around to the deck) for the bottom. Then the deck patch cut at the bottom of the rail before a 1" lap to wrap to the bottom.

Is this right?   the reason why I am saking is that I am struggling to get those really hard rails at the tail of the board and I have had to add a bit of extra hotcoat after intial sanding to get the hard rails back there, Im pretty confident that its not my sanding as I can get the rails Im looking for when I have enough hotcoat to work with but the rails back there seem to start off too rounded after glassing even after I have shaped them to be sharp.

Im still getting a good result but I would quite like to miss out on having to do the extra step to sharpen the rails as its time consuming and  I imagine completely un-nessesary. I was just wondering if it was where I was cutting the cloth that could have been the problem.

Computer fart, D.P. Sorry.

Speedy, The advice you got is right on. In the future if you want that really hard edge, round the foam off a little (very little) and then laminate. The glass will wrap easier and adhere much better. Then come back and do the tape and dam method per PeteC's drawing.

Thanks both of you, very useful.tips

A picture might help:

Use a separate piece of tape at the tail and maintain the gap for the dam at the corners. You may need a second layer of overlapping tape at the bottom to prevent leaks or just use wider tape.  Per the  previous post, do the deck first and tape it per the directions.

Hot coat the deck first all the way to the bottom of the rail tuck. Flip the board and grind the laps untill the over lap is feathered. Tape around the board at the line where the deck hotcoat stops around the back of the board where you want a hard edge you want the tape to rise very slightly above the board so you can make the hard edge. When you stick the tape stick it to the apex of the rail and below…to the deck…leaving it loose around the intended edge. When you hotcoat start with a rail cheater coat ans brush the resin sideways t’wards the tape and in the gap between the board and tape. Feather that wait for the wax to rise then apply your hot coat. If you do that right you’ll have an easy to sand built up hard edge.
