It’s me again, the guy debating on shaping his first board. Thanks for the encouragement, I’m going for it. I got my Shaping 101 video, feel a bit like a kook - my wife just keeps laughing at me (common occurrence), but on we go. I’m making an attempt at a summer cruiser with the following rough dimensions; 10’ 19x23x16 and 3.125 to 3.25 thick – any thoughts? So what blank would you guys recommend? Is the 10’1”Y big enough or would I be better off with a 10’5”S or something else? And here’s the stupid question, where does one go about getting a blank? I’m in NorCal, I know FSC carries a bunch of supplies, any other suggestions?
I believe you can purchase Clark Foam Blanks from Fiberglass Santa Cruz. ph# 831-475-5937
I believe you can purchase Clark Foam Blanks from Fiberglass Santa Cruz. > ph# 831-475-5937 yes, and fiberglass hawaii (they bought monterey bay fiberglass). 831-476-7464 i buy blanks from both fsc and fiberglass hawaii. they both have some really helpful employees. don’t hesitate to ask them “rookie” questions, they are used to it, and really cool about it. i would call both of them to check what they have in stock. brian
Yeah, like I mentioned, I’ve talked with the guys at FSC, they were cool about it - for the most part. I’ll give 'em a call and they probably help with the blank selection, I was just hoping for some more input here.

After somewhat recovering from the Herb Spitzer shock, you must learn a lesson from him; keep the wife laughing. You must control foam dust at any cost. Deck the garage with visqueen. Even with visqueen, you will be finding dust in places you didn’t think had places. Never, ever, wear your “shaping shoes” in the house. Buy a cheap jump suit to shape in and never, ever wear it in the house. You cannot wash foam dust out of anything so never, ever put your “shaping suit” in the washing machine. If you are going to use a power planer (I suggest you do your first one by hand to get a better feel for foam) invest in the shop-vac exhaust system. (if you do this right, the wife will allow you to shape again) That said, go longer so if you screw up you’ve still got something to work with. Measure three times, cut once. Take a little off at a time, don’t rush. and finally…DON’T WORRY, JUST MOW!
The 10’1" Y blank is definitely worth a closer look. Check out some of the tools that fellow Swayloholics have designed (check “boards” → “tool” → “diagram”) The “contour control tool” by Peter Rijk is a really nice one for keeping your rails symmetrical. Noodle has posted a bunch of detailed outline dimensions. With a saw, sharp block plane, longblock and some screen you can pull it off!

Dave if I read your measurements right the 10’1 sounds like the ticket. You will be real close on the dimensions. If you are going to put a box in watch the tail thickness closely. If you are going to shape it by hand you might try finding a shaper in your area to at least skin the blank for you.Might cost you a beer or a burger but most shapers are pretty cool about stuff like this.

Im in NorCal, I know > FSC carries a bunch of supplies, any other suggestions? Dave, I would consider pulling in the tail dimension a little bit. I found with my ten-six that the tail was too wide on the first go around and turning was hard (of course at that size it isn’t easy), the 2nd one I pulled the tail dimension in and it handles a lot better. e-mail me if you want the dimension and I’ll get my lazy butt up and go out to the shop and look.(btw I weigh 165# plus wetsuit) For blanks and supplies I prefer Fiberglass Supply (509)493-3464. (if you do this right, the wife will allow you to shape > again) Well, I’ve done just about everything of the above wrong. I’ve set up my shaping bay in the basement(I would have used the garage if I had one) and the room is basicly to small for the board so I have to have the door open. Same place as the cat sleeps… do you know how much foamdust a cat can carry in it’s fur? Last week my wife washed my shaping t-shirt(I’d put it in a pile inside out so she didn’t really notice the 1/4" of foamdust on it) along with some other t-shirts. There is foamdust everywhere in the house. I’ve promised to not make another board for a looooooong time(hah!). She’s the best. regards, Håvard
