Where to buy a decent planer

My old planer just crapped out on me. The tool was grandfathered in from a relative so I didn’t have to go look for one.  I need to know where I can get a good one for a decent price simply put. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

buy a refurbished one. google it, and you could get one for 1/4 of the price

If you're just doing boards for yourself, you can get by with one of the relatively inexpensive (but ''decent'') tools. If you're trying to do any kind of numbers, and/or selling boards, you should get a Hitachi P20 and work towards modifying it per the "Clark Hitachi''. Or find a used one with the mods.

If you're doing mostly big boards, something larger than the P20 might be useful. There's been some talk on here about a Makita that looks good, and more recently a big (but more expensive) Virutex. For shortboards the P20 is plenty of planer, though.

Howzit Tommy, glad to see you’ve kept going. If you check out: www.cpomakita.com, they sell factory re-conditioned 810 Makita planers for, $220.00. PeteC the resident planer Guru recommends them. They are well made and are easily adapted for blanks.

Just found another site: www.reconditionedsales.com. They have a Hitachi for; $115.00 right now and even one for $80.00. Check it out.

Check out the cordless Hitachi 12V on the 2nd. site. Wonder what kind of “balls” it’s got? Could be promising for the back yarder. It’d be great to get rid of the cords.
