Which are the absolute No1 and No2 Ozzie surfmags ?

Hi all,

Which are the absolute No1 and No2 Ozzie [shortboard] surfmags ?

Thanks for your reply,

Wouter

ASL is the definite number one in sales, its take the piss attitude is pretty funny too. It generally has alot more reading material than the others. Tracks is maybe no. 2, then WAves no.3 not sure though.

Due to the fact these magazines are marketed to the

A.D.D. generation, who cant sit still for 5 minutes if they are not seeing some action photographs, they all disolve into a pile of shit when put up against the surfers journal and surfer path.

…depends on your age , and what you like …

In terms of QUALITY photos , printing and articles , the Australian Surfers Journal USED to be , along with Deep, and Surfing World …

In terms of sales to impressionable groms , cosmopolitan type gossip articles, and inaccurate reporting by young editors who don’t know s*** , then Mick’s probably right … Australian Surfing Life , Tracks, and Waves … unfortunately.

I find it very sad that quality got knocked out by “G.S.T.” [general sales tax…made “ASJ” too expensive ]… and , unfortunately, the death of "Deep’'s main man , Peter Crawford .

It seems here in Oz, second rate reporting and articles [ASL, Waves, Tracks] sell more [or maybe there’s just more cashed up grommets here ??].

Nick Carroll is probably ASL’s only redeeming feature…

“Surfing World” still exists , and is still good , photography and articles wise . It has a different editor now.

The previous editor and owner, Bruce Channon [along with “Aitionn” / Hugh McLeod, for twenty or so years [!!] is now editing (and has improved !) “Australian Longboarding” , to now also include informative articles on shortboards too [usually 70s ones , and people’s quivers]

to give you some idea …the current issue of Australian Surfing Life is celebrating [in it’s own words]

“20 years of the best magazine in the universe” ,

while Surfing World has quietly been going about its publication since 1962…

Being an avid reader im more inclined to want surf mags that have a lot of words. I dont know what it is about the short ass magazines they never seem to be able to get away from the dear diary entry style of writing. But we should consider ourselves lucky in Oz not to have dissolved into the ad catalogue mentality of surfer and surfing yet.

i just saw a recent issue that had a funny artical about the C.S.O i like the saucies…you guys rock over there…i like your funny strait forward no bull attitudes…non media controled mag or less control than mags in the us.age does matter what?

I am shot at the moment why all aussie mags only go the pro trail. Surfing world a couple of years ago went off track , sucked me into a subcription then went back to the pro’s. not that I don’t like the surfing or that , but not everything evolves around contests

tracks has and always will be the best surfing mag in the history of the universe.hell they even apologised for going glossy as the young groms thought it was a news paper . Goodvibes lives eternal.

Panny , I agree…

the ‘road trip’ stuff in the 70s and eighties , and their two quality books were , in my opinion anyway , Surfing World’s golden years !

As far as the new ones go (ie. tracks, waves etc.) ASL is the better of the bad bunch. Waves second, Tracks last.

I like Aussie longboarding and Pacific longboarder but there even to contest orientated and full of ads. but they do have good articles.

Josh.

Roadsong and Eagle Island were my favorites.

tracks was better when it was a newspaper I reckon …it wasn’t quite so hard to wipe the botty with …
