Which boards should I bring to Hawaii with me?

I’m moving to Hawaii in a week and am planing on bringing along two boards.

I’ve got my new 7’0 gun

My tripple stringer single fin

and a Skip Frye fish.

I’m pretty sure the gun is coming, but the debate is over the 6’0" single fin and my 6’1" Fish

I was told people don’t really ride fish in Hawaii. is this true? Why?

Also, how can I be sure the boards survive the flight? at least one board a week comes in at the ding shop that has been brutalised by the airlines.

I was thinking about building a box out of about 5 layers of cardboard reienforced with stirofoam.

Cheers.

Howzit Rhino, Moving to Hawaii, you are in for a treat. There are fish boards ridden here, just not as much as on the mainland. As for the 7’0" gun, it really wouldn’t be considered a gun in Hawaii, actually not even a semi gun. Semi’s usually start at around 8’ plus and guns at over 9’. But the 7’0" would probably work in the mid range waves of 6’ to 8’. Aloha,Kokua

I’d take the one that works best in small waves…I guess that would be the fish. You see fish…mostly on the south shore.

How well do you surf and what kind of waves do you plan to tackle?

I’m an ok surfer, mostly mild turns, ect. (I dont get all G-nar with the airs and the fliping madness)

and don’t plan on paddeling into more than a 10’ face…for now at least.

What’s the surfer density compaired to your average SD break or trestles?

where at in Hawaii?

the density can be high in the water as well as in the brains of a lot of guys.

fish can be surfed anywhere on the island of oahu, just depends on the conditions for the day. i’ve gone fishing all the way from aina haina to makaha and up around to lani’s etc.

go with the fish, it is the most convenient for travel. You might not want to take any board and pick up the arsenal upon arrival. Hard to find a better place to find a board for HI. Joose.

ps. If you have money trouble the fish will get some interest.

Don’t worry about the locals, just try not to be a kook, the sharks haoles and tourists are usually more of a threat.

But with a name like rhino you might want to take the biggest thing ya got.

Hv fun in HI.

Take the fish (you never know).

Sell the other boards.

Get some boards in Hawaii

edit< oops, didn’t read the reply above!

I say sell the fish. The market for that fish is unbelievable in cali. You can come here and buy 5 boards with the money you get from it. Build your self a homemade box, tell the airline it’s a display, and put fragile stickers on it. You won’t have to pay the xtra 100 dollars to bring a board over.

see you out there

The board was a personal gift from skip after I cut off my middle finger last year. There is no way I would ever sell it. Not in a million years. I was even homeless for three months this year and I did not sell it!

Thanks for Airline tip!

What do you mean by display?

don’t bring any of them and save the transport fee

for that amount of money you can get a decent used board here on craigslist especially now after christmas sales…

use your funds to get some form of transportation first as boards are easy to come by.

And there’s enough swaylockians here to help…

Austin,

Oneula has given you some very sound advice. Follow it.

Ditto. The best boards for Hawaiian surf are already in Hawaii. You can buy decent used boards for less than the baggage fee. Check out the local surf swaps that happen regularly.

Get set up by a local swaylocker.

Hawaiian boards for Hawaiian waves.

Ok,any one out there have a decent board for around $100?

I think you would be better served if you stated some dims for yourself and the boards you’re looking for.

no sense me saying I have several 5’11 x 18 x 2 thrusters for sale if you’re 6’4" @ 200lbs

honolulu craigslist is good place to start, as well as surfboardshack.com

what do you consider a decent board?

being that I have maybe 25-35 boards lying around my house in one form or another I’m sure where there’s a will there’s way…

based on memory I figuring you at 6’-6’1" and a skin and bones 150-160lbs?how far off am I?

problem is I’m more around 190-200 so all my boards usually start at 2.75"

PM me with your vitals and I’ll see what I have around here that might work out.

getting from point a to point b in the air is enough of a hassle these days no need to complicate matters with a board bag to boot to piss off my friends who work as baggage handlers.

Am I a dick for wanting to know how he cut off his finger?
