I’m keen to give epoxy a go, seeing as Resin Research isn’t available here, what else is recommended? I’ve seen Bote Cote and ATL Kinetix recommended, what about the stuff FGI has (R180?), any others?
I’ll probably try doing pigment so minor yellowing isn’t a problem, but I’ve read about different resins doing things like having the hot coat peel off.
I've been using the ATL Kinetix epoxy for repairs for a while now with good results. It's a 2:1 mix. The resin is super thick, so in cold climates it takes ages to decant. It also takes longer than the specs say to gell and cure. The good thing is the specs say it is compatable with poly. I have been filler coating with poly over it with no problems to date. platty.
I’ve been using Kinetix as well, with good results on the three boards I’ve done so far. But you generally need above 20C for it to cure in a reasonable timeframe, so unless you have a heated workspace, forget about it for winter.
Go the Resin Reserch contact details in Paulr’s post above, great prices and cheap freight and Kane knows what he is talking about. I was using Kinetix but have probelms with slight delams. The two boards I have done with RR are brighter on XPS blanks also (one has a tinted deck and it looks great). I have used both Kwik Kick and ce2020 with the fast hardner. I do the Lam coat with the ce2020 due to the lower viscocity and the gloss coat with KK. Both work great in my shed which is around 15 degrees with a heater on and with KK I can have both side coated in 1 day instead of having to leave the board over night with every coat using Kinetix.
both Billy Tolhurst and my self had issues with fibreglass hawaii epoxy delaming on burfords blanks if the were unpainted white…
how we found out was that most pu were sprayed white and no issue… until we had a lap sandthru on the flip… then a couple months later we would get delam in that area…
we twigged to why the non sprayed white burfords always delammed… but the king foam didnt and bill had a surfblanks or 2 that didnt…
