I have the opportunity to buy either a 9’ 6" Velzy or a 10’ Hobie, both from the mid 60’s in good condition, both priced around $500-. I don’t know which models they are and I don’t think the owners do either. Which would you go for when considering the combo of rarity, collective value, and general awsomeness? I’m leaning toward the Velzy because, well, it’s Velzy! And I believe he produced fewer overall boards than Hobie.
What kind of Velzy is it? If it says Velzy Surfboard of Champions then its a pop out, which confuses a lot of people. Just by curiosity is the person selling these boards Steve in RI?
Here are some pics of the Velzy. I’ve been reading as much as I can online about Velzy going through a popout phase due to tax problems and that those boards are not as valuable. Any insiders out there?
Yeah that is a popout, its in good condition, but not as collectible as you would think. 500 is a decent price for that board, but it is in no way a board that you buy for 500 and is worth 1000. I have the exact same board, fun board to ride. They were made in the mid 60’s, Velzy ran into money problems licensed out the plug and they were massed produced and sold at your local department store.
Have any pics of the Hobie?
No pics of the Hobie yet since it’s in a local surf shop owner’s storage unit. The owner of the Velzy is Steve from RI, small world. I’m not expecting to retire off of buying vintage boards, but certainly would like to find one that could possible appreciate in value over the years. Thanks for the info!
I just bought a Hobie off of Steve a couple weeks ago and I am waiting for a buddy to pick it. Wondering if he is offering the same board to you? hmmmm
Too funny. I was actually trying to buy that board off him but you must have beat me to it. He’s actually not the one selling the Hobie. Someone up here in NH is.
Oh gotcha haha, wow now this is awkward because I emailed him asking if he was offering the Hobie to other people lol. That Velzy is nice, if i didn’t already have one I would buy it, mine doesn’t have the wood d fin though. Board is in great condition especially for a 50 year old board, i haven’t seen a lot of them around. Might be worth grabbing it!
