white pigmented resin for finbox

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question but why do people use white pigmented resin for installing finboxes? Is this just a polyester thing or does it apply to eps/epoxy construction.

thanks

people pigment the resin so that it doesn’t look like the box is just floating. it looks much better/cleaner this way.

That’s actually a good question. One reason it’s done that way is, if the tail on your surfboard is thin, the black finbox will show through on the deck. White resin will keep everything white.

Also, if you use a dark color like black to match the box, the resin squeezes under the glass just enough to make the edges of the installation look messy.

Some glassers use white finboxes, but my experience has been that they are a little softer, so I went back to the black ones. Doug
