Who do ideas belong to?

Its been said that ideas tend to re-invent themselves, and because of that they belong to everyone. If thats true, then why all the bullshit about what came from whom? Or who ripped off who? Or who should get paid for what? I`ve been reading through some early 2003 archives and have discovered much flame, but little light. Are there any simple answers?

O.K. from now on I own all Ideas.send me questions and money for answers any new answers that come from my answers effect I own those too all you will owe me everything you ever get from all my Ideas oh yea Ideas are to always be capitalized because I say so cause they are mine… I hope this helps I know it makes me feel much better.to know that finaly I’ll get something for all this thinking Ive been doing day in and day out even while I’m asleep let alone explaining Everything to Everybody …and if you dont wanna do this then I will stop having Ideas and you will have to think about everything your self and figure it all out too and I will just play solitaire for a dollar a card and drink whiskey till I die…and You can spell ideas with a small i. …ambrose …channeling the former smartest guy in the history of mankind who died at a card tableup somewhere up by mono lake during the late gold rush damn its been alot harder since we turned him down… we coulda just paid him and said thanks …and saved a lot o’ time

your idea is deemed worthwhile (i.e. new useful and nonobvious) by the US patent office and you are willing to share the idea in return for a monopoly on it for 20 years, well then you “sorta” own it…at least you get to prohibit others from making using or selling that idea for 20 years (assuming you pay the USPTO fees to maintain the contract). you also kinda own an idea if you keep it to yourself, in legal terms, this would be known as a trade secret. if anyone is getting ideas on patenting things they have been doing and writing about for over a year, well, think again…those ideas are, at least legally, in the public domain and free to use by all. this is the legal stuff…it seems that the first post was more of an ethical issue. i am not an ethicist.

3.14: 7 thats a good trade and if you trrow in two godzilla cards with the gum I’ll be your best friend… and the flame in the east? reduce the fin to increase the speed C.O.L.R. has to come from directional bottom shape without … tracking … IDEA … not … what we do is inovate. The yankee ingenuity is what we have for sale in the world market. People world wide dont need… us… in the world cosmology but for that trait we seppos can figure it out because we are decendants of people who broke free from feudalism to create a new criterion that lives to spawn new criterion. god bless their resting souls if not for their hard work we wouldnt have the free time to think up Ideas and then make em work . The stools my grandfather made from that piano sombody threw away are an inspiration to me Just a stool to some one else? because they wern’t held hostage for a days pay to own one… maybe that is…what makes Ideas… inovations… valuable? Respect then appreciation not depreciation when I saw a piece of plastic irrigation pipe on the beach this morning I wanted to make something out of it … of use…ambrose AM I NUTS ? …yes arent we all?

Thats silly- inventions dont invent their inventors. “Whadya mean I stole YOUR fin design? Hey, it “invented” itself, dude!” Have fun- but don`t get caught!

All ideas are pretty much based upon others’ ideas. Everyone shapes guns that look just like Brewer’s, right? He is the man for the Elephant Gun, Waimea Bay. People can make modifications, but it’s his idea. Leash plugs. Again, they look different, but come from the same idea. If you put color on your next board, are you a thief? Someone else thought of it first (most likely before you were born). Other people wear shoes. DOes that make you a brainless idiot because you do it too? Heck, if I never saw an adult film I would still be a lousy lover. No joke. That’s why I thought so many people were just a-holes when they told me to figure out my own formula for surf wax. Finally someone gave me one. We all copy. ALL OF US COPY.

The best answers are always simple, sometimes… In the clarity of the early morning hours may I offer this? The person who invents fiberglass : inventor The person who makes fiberglass into cloth : inventor of fiberglass cloth The person who first uses fiberglass cloth on surfboards : innovator Same with foam, although if it happened today I bet somebody would “claim” inventing balsa wood. Simon Anderson invented the “thruster” tri-fin. But almost a decade earlier I rode a tri-fin made by Dick Brewer - single fin with two little, roundish side fins. Night and day difference in how you had to ride these two different boards. Maybe both are inventors, or maybe both are innovators. Toss the Bonzer in there for added merriment… As to ownership of ideas, well, that’s an economic and legal issue. If you have a patent, it belongs to you. If not, maybe the credit belongs to you. Sadly in the latter case you don’t really get to control that. Wwhen the pissing wars really heat up I sometimes think a lot of people would be happier if they could look at the design and building issues in surfing as if it were more like music. Someone else may have written the song, but each person can have their own arrangement, and everyone get some kind of credit.
