Who is Joe Sauter?

Kia Ora, I’m trying to find out a bit about a board I just aquired.

The board is a 5'8 twin fin fish, shaped by Joe Sauter, and the only info I could find about him online is a couple of posts here on Swaylocks. I live in New Zealand by the way, the guy i bought it off just said he got it at a shop on Long Beach, and I'm just curious - i guess like to know what (who) I'm riding. Any info you can give me would be appreciated!
Thanks, olly

joe comes from my old east side long beach,ca. neighborhood, and still resides there.

his learning background comes from shapers/builders like johnny bragg, rick mchale, les pronier, and many others to follow.

he’s basically a hobbyst,like myself.

but all old school. cut-laps,tints,pinlines,…glossed… type of builder.

i went the other route…freelaps, airbrush, sandout…coated …type of builder.

joe along with rick mitchell and myself… have spent some time together, during our infancy of,“Learning to build surfboards”

we still remain good friends to this date.

in my opinion,we learned for some of the best in the world.

wow!

this is awesome! thanks so much Herb. Its really nice to know the lineage of a board... we call it whakapapa down here - genealogy, its a concept that holds great importance for our people and our environment. It might seem a bit stange to reflect that onto a surfboard, but from what i read on this forum I'm sure y'all will understand.

i took a couple of shots of her:

and a pic of Piha, my local:

“this is the dog’s bollocks”

for me.

i’ll try and get this computer to print a copy for me and next time i’m in the area,i’ll pay him a visit.

a good friend of ours from the eastside tom goffe was a super exceptional glasser…we learned together, but tom just excelled in it…gifted…no doubt.

you know, i started this thread selfishly… i just wanted to know who shaped my board - so my enthusiasm for it could be a bit more informed. I never really thought i’d stoke anyone else out. And its got me thinking, although i’m sure its not why you guys do it, it must be a major perk to think that these things you make, spend hours/days/weeks/months of your time on… have lives of their own, and two or three owners down the track, can end up in parts of the world you’ve probably never given a moments thought to… like new zealand!

you may do it for the art… you may do it for the craft… you may do it to push boundaries, or to “keep it real”… but at the end of the day, when these boards leave your workshop, they NEVER cease to stoke people out! whether they get ridden, passed down, hung, or recycled. So Herb, when you visit your buddy Joe, thank him for me… and if you think Tom Goffe glassed it, thank him too - thank the guys you all learned from… and pat yourself on the back while you’re at it!

i should see him this weekend.

thank you for sharing.

and yes,you hit it on the nail head.

my best.

i’ll get back with you.
