Who surfs Baylys: Very trippy board concepts

Getting a bit boring. A pic and link to liven it up.

Would you?

Of course I would… Thanks for sharing…

As an artist weirdo myself,

I couldn’t resist given the opportunity.

I appreciate the process.

Both creative and craftsmanship.

Bravo!

Right?

Yep.

That’s exactly what I was thinking when I saw that photo.

Except upside down.

Right?

I’ll have to catch up with the guy who makes and rides em one day down at Baylys.

In my mind the lift may be fantastic, but staying on right way yp may be a challenge. But the concept is so far beyond my ken that I have no idea what it does.

Ride it? -> Heck yeah! I’d give it a shot for at least a few waves if someone offered me a go.

Try to shape one? -> Ummmmmmm… :slight_smile:

As for the calls by Barry and Dr Zoid on the shape being manta-ish; to be honest, what first went through my head when I saw it was “hammerhead shark”.

Maybe that’s the idea of it; if you keep your head low as you’re paddling out, try and hide behind the “hammer” and paddle unobtrusively, everyone else in the line-up will see this hammerhead shape heading out towards them, and hey-presto; empty lineup all for you!

Would be very interested to hear how it actually goes; I vaguely recall seeing a few pics back in the 90’s of a few experimental boards Greg Webber made under the Insight label with a similiar idea (oversized flyers/rail fins curving down into a hyper-concave bottom). Very spacey and futuristic. Turned out to be more art than functional though when he actually tried riding them, from what I recall of the captions that went along with the pics.

Cheers all.

Along way back on a visit to Maui I once saw a guy kiting on a hollowed out and bent piece of plywood about a meter long with a 3 inch concave and sharp hard rails. I tried it and although it was a bit scary, pointy/heavy it was really rather good, I have to say. Back then everyone was on HUUGE boards so this guy was way ahead in my view.

So as someone said on another forum “let the freak flag fly!!!” I love that outside the box deal for sure !! Ride report would be good though.

red_boards - are you in the far north ? as these boards are shaped in baylys beach - Dargaville, in northland new zealand - my home town.

Karuhi,

Bit further than I thought. I’m in Vicco, Aus. I thought it was a local river mouth. I’ll definitely try to make contact next NZ trip. Tell the shaper people are digging his style and would love a ride report.
