Who's going to Big Sur 2012?

Definitely Epac.

It WILL work out.

Love to have you.

I’ll roll up Thursday. Thanks Chris~

Attention all you (us) “Southers.”   Do you all know about “Carmeggedon?”  The 405 freeway will be closed that weekend.  Plan alternate routes and plan on those alternate routes being jammed…

My old Vanagontends to overheat in stop and go traffic.  Maybe I’ll just call AAA and have them tow me home while…

Yes, “Carmageddon II” — the 405 will be closed Sat 29th and Sun 30th between I-10 and 101.

I plan on driving home on I-5  (cutting over from the coast around Paso Robles) to avoid that as much as possible (versus normally i’d come south on 101 to 405).   Then maybe even go around on the 210 to 15 if traffic looks really bad on google maps.  At least there are options, albeit a bit more mileage.

so this just in

i will have an open parking spot to anyone that wants to come hang out

spot #35

just try to let me know ahead of time

How cool. I haven’t been on Swaylocks much in recent years and just logged on recently and saw this thread. Perfect timing! I’m already heading down from SF to SD on a ten day california surf vacation. I’m due in Avila to see Wilco on Saturday the 29th so maybe I’ll stop by plaskett and see if I can crash somewhere Friday night or at least stop by Saturday on my way south. Hope to meet some of you in person!L

Maraboutslim!

You were around when I first got on here under a different name years ago. You gotta stop in.  You're here in Calif. on the 1, why not? Camp ground is right next to the school inland side of the 1 and the beach lot is just up from the school.

We have BEER.....

Cool MSlim!

Stop by for sure

Thanks guys! I’ll try to make it then.

Mark is working on a more powerful pump for our after surf hot water shower. Gas is over 4 bucks a gallon!!! Stingray wants to make deals...We've got mixing cups in all sizes....Large...small...and x-small..and smaller! Sanding blocks too!

I started to make some thickness calipers but ran out of time....some fin stuff...and other surf stoke for trade. No tail blocks this year because we ran out of cool wood.....donations welcome...got wood strips? Let's make a deal....ha ha

time to take a break from work. go to a place without cell phones or internet.... unlock, unload. no news.....wow. relax....

See you soon..........Ray

latest Big Sur surf forecast for Sway’s weekend:  10-11 foot at 12 seconds on Saturday, 13-14 on Sunday… bring the right board!!

"  latest Big Sur surf forecast for Sway's weekend:  10-11 foot at 12 seconds on Saturday, 13-14 on Sunday... bring the right board  !!   "

or , perhaps , [ ? for most ?! ] ...

  the right lens ...

....................

.......................

...........................

........................... for your camera !

I expect PLENTY of photos ...

.... of keith , resinhead , plusoneshaper  [.... and , maybe , one or two other self-confessed "big wave heroes"  ... [herb? bill thrillkill? ....LeeDD ?!] , " charging " some big waves  .

This will be really good , because if the forecast swell DOES show , it will be where the bullshit stops , and the surfing starts , in terms of all the talk from over the YEARS here , of how much so-and so supposedly "rips" .

It will also , I am thinking , test people's boards and design theories MUCH more quickly and CLEARLY than twenty pages of mass-debating theory on some angry thread ever would . ha!

Now , [thanks to your warning forecast , Keith !]  , there can  be no excuses like "oh , I didn't think we would be getting waves THIS size " [?! ]

This will be very interesting , now ....

now , people have NO excuse for not taking photos !

  PHOTOS PLEASE

for the record , I would be one of , if not  THE main , [beach] photographer for the weekend .... were I american , cashed  up , and the owner of a pentax , olympus , nikon , or canon DSLR , with at least a 500mm lens , and maybe about ten 64gb cards [footage and photos of every wave caught , covered , then ...for the "Big Sur[f] Swaylocks Weekend " dvd ! [hint hint]

...maybe , just "maybe" ...

after this "Swaylockian weekend "  ,  then " the photography thread "  may end up getting resurrected ? [hint , hint]

someone out of the at least thirty people on the beach , PLEASE take the time / make the effort to document this , as the other THOUSANDS and thousands of non-cali people on this forum "might" be interested in seeing big cali waves being surfed by people we have conversed with over the years [even if only via keyboard] .

I wonder if I've made it clear enough ?

......some visual evidence of this exciting big wave weekend would be most appreciated , guys !

  cheers !

When Sand Dollar gets this big it’s more a problem getting out (it’s a beach break).  There are short-cuts and keyholes but if the surf is lined up you will be denied.  If it’s peaky and broken up (like 12-second stuff) there may be some corners.  I think a lot of Swayfolks have scored some 10-15 foot faces out there over the years but it’s a lot of swimming around and waiting to pick one off. The best is 3-10 feet and even at that size, it can kick your ass!  You want a board that paddles well and duck dives well which is kind of mutually exclusive.  I’d go with paddling and try and scoot through the keyhole.  Big penalty if you miss your mark though…

good on ya Lee

will you be bringing your evil twin ,

 the 'other' Lee !

what board[s]  will YOU be taking ?

  and FINS , too ?

[the 'right' fins could be equally as important , perhaps]

I'm thinking there may not be too many fishes , 'alaias' , hulls , or mini simmons , or mals getting ridden , this weekend ....[IS it this weekend ?  tomorrow , for you guys ...today , HERE in west oz] ...or is it NEXT weekend ?!]

whenever , have FUN !!  and stay SAFE !

WHERE are the photos of the previous 15 foot day[s] you mentioned , by the way , please , LeeV ...is there a thread I missed over the last 8 years of sways get togethers ?

cheers !

  ben

p.s. -

ARE there OTHER , more sheltered breaks ,

a near walk , or drive, away , "IF" it is closing out where you are , all weekend / week ?

it would be sad if "let's stay here only" mentality kicks in when a few miles up or down the road , empty perfect points were going unridden , yes ?

otherwise

[? at the risk of being accused of "SACRILEGE"??  hahaha ]

Have ANY of you got JET SKIS ???

And tow-in boards ?

.....or ....

are they " definately NOT ALLOWED"  ,  there and elsewhere , on that coastline ??

.....just curious ....

cheers !

I’m pretty sure there are photos of the bigger days in the archives somewhere.  They don’t look that impressive because they are so far out there and you have to be up on the cliff to see over the white water.  The noise will keep you up at night and I swear you can feel the ground vibrate.

Swayfolk ride everything out there, and I mean everything.  My 6’4" fishull went great in some 10’ faces if the tide was right. Mats, belly boards, longboards, short boards, singles, twins, twinzers, thrusters, widow makers, quads and pents…

Unfortunately I won’t make it again this year (that makes two in a row).  I had rotator cuff (shoulder) surgery last month and am just starting my 9-month recovery…Next year for sure!  I’ll have two 6’10" twin fin fishguns that should go real well!

Don’t know if LeeDD has been there.  He never introduced himself.  Bill T. is more a Sunset Beach Haw.  kind of guy where experience with the currents gets you where you want to go.  San Dollar takes more brute strength and luck than savvy when it gets big.

Hi Ben -

Don't get your hopes up.  No jet ski access that I'm aware of anyplace close.  It basically ain't a surf porn kind of thing.

The main reason I originally chose Plaskett Creek (campground)/Sand Dollar (beach) is there is no cell phone service, no AC power, no showers, no internet access and the beach is an easy walk from the campground so you can ditch your car for the weekend.  It was also a place where reservations could be made for the group sites.  That got kind of complicated so now days it's every man for himself.

If I could convince myself, there'd be no cameras either, but I'm as guilty as the next guy of wanting to preserve the special moments.

" Hi Ben -

.... yep !

I shoulda guessed !

"Silly " , hopeful me ..... WHAT was I thinking ???!!!

If there is ONE thing that over eight years of coming to sways  has taught me , it's just THAT !  ... " don't get your hopes up tooo high ! "

So , that way , I guess I won't get [too ] disappointed / "surprised" by people's unreliability [you guys call it 'flakiness' , I believe?] , apathy , and laziness.   Plus , it's too much effort for most to upload photos onto sites such as "photobucket" , I'm guessing ?  [ ....on that note ..... I often wonder why the hell I bother , sometimes ?!]

Anyway, thanks for the photo , John ! [ It might well be the ONLY one we get to see , by the sounds of it , eh ?!]

Hopefully ,  cali ? has progressed beyond the "black wetsuit , one fin , no legrope , and no contests ever " mentality of the 1970s ..... hopefully ??!!

Sounds like I will never make it there anyway , and , if cameras  [ ? and "outsiders" ?]  are not welcome .... oh well ,   no great loss , I guess ??!!  [to you guys ]

"I guess I won't get [too ] disappointed / "surprised" by people's unreliability [you guys call it 'flakiness' , I believe?] , apathy , and laziness."

Sheesh Ben, it's not as if we're trained seals at the marine exhibit.

Well, OK.  Here are a couple of 'action' shots for ya...

Seriously, if I get any good ones, I'll post 'em here.  It'll be my number one priority. ;-)
